Certain GPS models work as stand-alones paired directly to their ELD plug, and if you're in the market for a GPS and an ELD, it would make sense to buy one of those models. The Dēzl570 I had unfortunately isn't one of them, and I wasn't about to buy another GPS...so it required a phone or tablet. Since I wasn't going to use my phone, I bought a tablet...and keep mobile data and wifi turned off while going down the road...only bluetooth (to pair with the ELD) and location services (so the ELD knows where I'm at) stay on. Once that phone or tablet is paired with the ELD and the GPS, the GPS displays the hours until your next required break...which is nice, because you can shut off the screen on the phone or tablet to conserve the battery (even though it says to keep it plugged in while driving...which just seems like a great way to shorten battery life).

BYOD is STUPID because no one is going to buy a ruggedized device for $1000+ (on top of the cost of the ELD Dongle ). Using a phone, as opposed to a dedicated unit is even worse.
You're attempting to take an "aging workforce" that doesn't want to use the thing anyway. Then you're going to hand them the smallest screen available and say "good luck."

Let's see a show of hands...
How many of you would work on your truck with nothing but Harbor Freight tools?
So, why would you attempt to utilize devices that are intended for Consumer Use (i.e. Netflix, scrolling through forums, FaceBook and watching Porn) in a "Heavy Duty Industry?"

NONE of these devices are intended to be operated (constantly, all day, every day) the way the ELD Apps need them to. Something's going to break. I make a living off of these things and can't stand the BYOD Concept, because the only thing you're bringing is Crap.
