When I bought my first trucking Idaho all I did was go to the port of entry and ask for a temporary license. All they needed was the title and my drivers license cost me I believe $90 and I was good to go.

You can have the truck first but it's not road legal until there's an active insurance binder for it. From my experience, nobody is getting a "transport" tag nor an Apportioned registration without insurance and nobody will write a policy without a DOT/MC number. Getting someone to write a non-commercial policy for a class 8 vehicle is next to impossible in most states too.

If you called your insurance company and told them your authority is not active and you want to insure your truck at the bare minimum coverage your state requires to keep it on the road for say personal business, they will do this.

I don't buy temp tags, they are rip off. $36 for 30 day around here, screw that I can buy 12 months for $50. I have bought semi's, trailers, pickups, cars, motorcycles as far as 800 miles from home. I call my insurance company and have them add it to my policy, go pay for it and drive it home. My pickup was the most recent. My wife and I rode the motorcycle (great day for a ride), looked it over, test drove it, paid the man, went DMV to have title signed to me. Lady behind counter says you want 30 day temp, I said no maam. She asked how I was getting it home, I said I brought a trailer to haul it home. The guy that sold it to me looked at me with widest eyes I ever saw. I got on the motorcycle, wife hopped in pickup and we went home.

I can call almost any insurance agent and ask for a liability policy and physical damage policy for a class 8 truck to drive it home after purchase. It's considered not for hire/ personal use. You only need apportioned tags if you're dealing with interstate commerce. If I was to turn my truck into a personal daily driver, I could walk down to the dmv and get me a regular vehicle plate for the truck and start driving.

I think you need to spend some time on the phone with your state and reading through their statutes.

That's incredible. I was with Allstate at the time and they told me to kick rocks even though I only wanted to transport the truck for personal reasons to get it home. So I called around and was told the same thing by Progressive and Geico. Then I called around for NTL/Bobtail because that's what they all claimed I needed. Then I ran into the whole you need a lease for us write a policy for that truck deal. Amazing.
