Private vs comman carrier advantages

I'm a small fleet operator. I opperate under a mc # now. I haul my own product with a occasional back haul that isn't related to my business. I know the differences between the two but what are the advantages to becoming a private carrier? If there's enough $ savings to give up the back hauls and become a private carrier. Being a private carrier can you hide the delivery charges in the price of the products?

 

I'm running under a mc# now. I do have back hauls once in a while (for hire). I've seen other private carriers with no mc #'s. I was just wondering if there was a reason they do it that way. It seems the would be limiting their potential revenue, unless there's a reason to do it that way.

 

Also if I invoice for delivery does that mean I'm a for hire?
