The biggest worry I would have about hiring a driver is having my equipment tore up. After seeing my fellow drivers in the oilfield drop driveshafts, bust up rears, tear out power dividers and so fourth I'd have to ride jump seat for a bit to feel confident.

Respect, honesty and kick ### dispatch.. make sure when your drivers call your office, you or your dispatchers answer the phones with smile on their face and in their voice, we call you when we need something and not to #### chat about life (most of the time
and believe me those 3 things will keep an owner op with you even if he is making less money then at another place where he doesn't feel respected.
same thing goes for company drivers, just make sure they get their 2500-3000 miles weekly, pay them on time, and you get them home when you promise them.
BEST OF LUCK!!truadvocate and tommymonza Thank this. -

I worked the patch up in ND and MT for four years as a driver, you know the score. And, having owned five trucks and trailers, the happiest day of my life is when I sold off that last piece of equipment. Now, one truck, it is paid for and leased to a very good carrier here in Detroit running local expedite. Very happy.
No way would I go that route again, not worth the headache. A 24/7 headache.

You have to develop YOUR niche with regards to customer base and go where that business takes you then find drivers where this suits their style and needs. Now, if you're planning on being a "trucking company who relies on brokers for everything", good luck with that. I would never work for a "carrier" who does mostly (if not all) broker loads ... unless they've been doing it a long time, got it down to just a few good brokers with good shippers and nearly dedicated lanes and schedules.
All sorts of drivers out here with all sorts of preferences that are often completely contradictory to the next guy. I'm at a place that most drivers would absolutely hate but the guys who have found a good home here because it fits their style will tell you it can't be beatLast edited: Jun 11, 2018

Yup! I will never work for a company again that has to put soccer score shouts anywhere on their tractors.

Look if you want to do this right, then you need a lot of capital long before you consider it.
