Welcome to the forum! Glad you wandered in!

Schneider isn't taking student drivers anymore. They are hiring experienced drivers only from what's been around here for a bit.

Browse the forum, jump in and ask questions. You'll get plenty of info and guidance. The industry is a bit rough right now though.

Everything seems slow now. I am plastered by the number of companies that offer training but am a bit confused. I see complaints on all of them which makes finding a good school difficult. Especially when you know you will have to work for them for a year or more to pay for schooling. I really wan't to find a good company to work for and not bounce around between jobs. I know from driving on a class b for a few years that many times a company hires someone who is unable to do a job as I have seen so real doooseys come and go where I work. It's just hard to seperate fact from fiction.

Some of it has to do with the individual. Some people are cut out for this industry, and others aren't. The best thing to do is do the research, read between the lines, and pick the company that feels like the best fit for you. Just remember that recruiters are out to put drivers in the seats, and nothing else.

    rc1,

Have you considered going to a private school on your own? I just finished the Sage school in Yadkinville and they have another of their schools at Spindale with Isothermal Community College near Rutherfordton. If you can afford it, going to a private school would greatly increase your choices and you'd be much more likely to find a carrier to fit your needs. I know each of these schools work with dozens of carriers, many of which are smaller and will never be listed on a forum like this.

    Good luck!

Can"t afford the private school route. Got 3 kids and a wife. What I'd like is to find a company that would train me, get me in every 10-14 days for a couple of days off with the kids and all and be making a payday after school. I do want to run legal however and NOT carry two logbooks etc. Any suggestions

One company you might want to check out is Millis Transfer. If they're still accepting new applicants, they have their own school and seem to be a decent company. The only reason that I didn't go that route is that I didn't want to wait 6 weeks to get into their school, which was the earliest that I could've gotten there as of the first of December. Other than that, you're pretty much going to be relegated to the traditional 'starter' companies, to the extent they are still hiring and accepting new students.

With the economy like it is, thousands of experienced drivers are out of work and looking for new positions and there are tons of new students looking for a way in as well. Freight is down, partly because of the time of year and partly because of the economy. From what I've been reading on here, a lot of the companies that run their own schools have either suspended them for the moment, or have hiring freezes on. There are a lot of good smaller companies out there that are still hiring, but you'll have to get through school on your own before they can take you.

    Good luck!

I recently bought a 90 T800 and a 95 Doepker Super B's for hauling grain off our farm. Found this Forum and joined.
I grew up in Northern Alberta Canada on a mixed farm. Apprenticed for H D Mechanic right after high school at a Cat Dealer. Went on my own after about 5 yrs. put everything into our farm which my wife and I started from scratch.
My truck driving experience from driving empty Rigs while the "real driver" slepted going to Edm for loads. Being a Field Mechanic in remote areas, I've had the opportunity from time to time to move equipment for Constuction and or Logging Co.'s when they were short a driver on occasion. I've still have a lot to learn when it comes to driving a semi, and I'm willing to just that, this forum is a wealth of truck driving info. And will definiately be a huge benefit.
    Thanks for now, Richard.
