I don't really understand the way that Intermodal Freight works.

If I have my own authority the way I understand it I need to either have a broker that will broker me container Freight or I need to find a motor carrier that handles container Freight that will broker it to me. I did speak with hub but they seemed like they wanted me to be commit to them and it sounded like some kind of BS to me honestly.

Will Norfolk Southern or CSX broker Freight directly to me? Can they do that?

I realize you cannot contract directly with the steamship lines if you're just a one truck operation. But are there other ways for a one truck operation to get container Freight?

You have 2 options. Either find your own customers who need cans picked up at the rail yard or run broker freight. You might try draynow.com. I don't know what area you're in, but they're advertising a lot in Chicago for small companies with their own authority. You can ask search loadmatch.com and see what's on there.

You will need an SCAC code and specific insurance coverage to pull rail owned containers, both of which the railroad has to have on file, unless you work for a someone else.

Finding a container hauler that will broker to you might be the easiest route.
