You've got it, but when I ran teams with a trainer it never worked out that way. We ran until we was out of hours for the day, and then swapped. It can work the way you are saying too, just depends on what you prefer. I guess it's different if you do it over the long haul, as you have to do it every day forever...Good luck, I like my space, but enjoyed the company of the teams.

With the laws being as they are; IE each driver must take a 10 hour break, splitting the day into 12 hour shifts just makes the most sense to me.

Yes, in a 10hrs sleep/ 9hrs on duty. 10hrs sleep need no rules, is mandatory. The 9hrs On Duty have its rules as follow:
1st. In order to have hours rolling back at the 9th day you most not stay On Duty more than 8.5 hours (8.5 x 8 = 68). Only 2hrs left of the 70hrs clock for weekly full PTI or contingency.
2st. The 1/2hrs to complete the 9hrs shift is the mandatory DOT Break.
3rd. You will use another 30 to 45 minutes in On Duty activity like PIT, Fuel, Hook/Unhook, Loading/Unloading per shift, all 9mins minimum acceptable each.
3rd. You are left with 7.45 to 8.0 hour Driving per shift (average 450 miles)
Figure out where to stop to best use your personal time. Your day restart every 19hrs, not 24 like a normal day.
Every other #### the last hour Off Duty/Sleep of one driver will allow 1hr for personal hygiene to both drivers if both overlap 1hr Off Duty.
Do your homework and you'll be able to run in 19hrs shift/ 8day weeks continuosly without burning your 70hrs clock and no need for 34hrs reset.
    Drive Safe.

How about 3-8 hour shifts per 24 hour period. Whatever needs to be handled over that 8 hour shift ie. PTI, fuel, load, unload, repair, food, driving, gets done and then the next driver comes on. The 8 hour break will reset your clock to where it was at the start of the break. This way the 30 minute break never comes into play and you will never need to take a 34. Thoughts anyone?

That won't work. You will end up with the truck parked for significant time every day, far more than taking two thirty minute breaks. Here's why:

Suppose you start your shift with full 8/11/14 hour clocks and your codriver is in the sleeper berth and will also have a full 8/11/14 hour clock when he/she starts their shift. Let's also assume your company requires a total of five minutes pretrip and five minutes post trip.

You start your clock with your pretrip and drive 7 hours 50 minutes nonstop and shut down for your post trip, then get in the sleeper berth. Once your codriver finishes 8 hours, what do you have coming back?

You will have only 6 hours left on your 14 and 3 hours 10 minutes left on your 11. Once your drive time is done you have to park the truck for almost five hours, waiting for your codriver's split 8 to finish. THEN you will have to take a full 10 hour break in sleeper or off duty to get a fresh 8/11/14. So when your codriver's has to park the truck after chewing through their hours coming back that truck will be parked for almost 7 hours!

Far far far better to split the day evenly in 12 hour shifts and take those 30 minute breaks AND have a fresh 8/11/14 clock to begin your shifts.

That seems the most sensible way to me,especially if one person doesn't mind night driving. It would keep your body clock on a semi normal routine. Also,it'll all wash out in the end as to who's driving for delivering, through cities, etc.

We also keep the same shift week after week. We don't swap shifts either almost a year and a half now, same 12 hour shift on same dedicated route. Week in and week out. I have been on night shift.,., by my choosing you can't get me to do days
