Yesterday Detroit Diesel sent me pack of new service information bulletins. I will attach two of them . they are about failed fuel pump repairs and about shape changing cylinder liners. Please take a look on 'metal shavingS in fuel ' repair procedure. if metal shavings are from you pump then be ready to pay around $8-10 k because many parts must be changed and entire fuel system must be disassembled, cleaned and assembled back. Scary ?

Second document is funny. here is portion from that document--->
NOTICE: Liners left on their side for any length of time can become egg-shaped and distorted, making installation into the cylinder bores difficult or impossible... WTF is this, they are made by carton or plastic ? or maybe Alien Gray's shape changing technology ?
or something new from Orient ? just imagine you put it on side for few minutes or two days and its egg-shaped already...so this document shows how to handle today's most advanced shape changing tech loaded cylinder liners
.
Bold message to Detroit Diesel PAY ATTENTION ON QUALITY OF COMPONENTS !Attached Files:

As some here know I am a Detroit man! Dd 13 is an ok engine if it isn't cut (set at 62) my boy's truck im running a 15 set at 70 . Pulls good has enough to get the job done!! Mine is a 16 with a big turbo around 588hp I get better miles with mine than the boy does with his and I'm running 100 more horses, but mine isn't working it's just cruising!!
Oldironfan Thanks this. -

I have totally changed my thinking on this very situation. I considered ordering a WesternStar 5700XE with a dd16 for the brute power. I have put 25000 mi. on a dd13 rated at 450hp and 1550 ft lbs of torque. It mated to an Eaton Ultrashift plus and I have to say it's a pretty good matchup getting 6.9 mpg pulling 42000 to 44000 lb lds all over the, country. It does drop off on a steep pull like Monteagle or Jellico but it still drops to 40mph and holds it to the top. My old 12.7 and 14 liter Detroit's never did any better and never avg over 5.6 to 5.7 mpg. The little motor is a all around great engine. As I stated it has changed my thinking. I would think a dd13 with the top h.p. setting and 1650 torque would satisfy most drivers. Also I have talked with mechanics whose fleets went to the dd 15 from the dd13 and went right back to it. It's lighter, better in every category than a dd15 except for the hard pulls. Seeing is believing and driving it 99 days out of a hundred, I go with the dd13. This is in a O/O specd Cascadia. In about 4 weeks I get a 2019 Cascadia that my wife and I are going to team drive from Tenn. to Ca. every week. I have done that run in the one I drive now and it was a great ride. I hope this helps. Good luck!! Be safe out there!!uncleal13 Thanks this.

I have completely changed my thinking based on the last few months of driving a O/O specd Cascadis R/R all over the country. After 25000 mi. driving a dd13 mated to a Eaton Ultrashift plus, I have thoroughly enjoyed the little motor that could! It is a pleasure to drive. The only drawback is on long pulls it does drop down to 8th gear and 40mph. When it gets there it stops and pulls at that speed until it starts speeding up. Which is a rare occasion. Monteagle, Jellico and a few hills out west. I went to Calexico, Ca. with it and it did very well and gets 6.9 mpg all the time. I am trying to get 7 mpg and feel like I can. 6 months ago I would have laughed at this motor and opted for a dd15 or even a dd16. Not now. I'm sold on this engine. In fact my wife and I are getting a 2019 Cascadia with the same specs as the 2017 Cascadia I drive now. We will be running from Tenn. and N.C. to Ca. weekly and I can't wait. It made a believer out of me and I think you would be very happy with it. I just checked the Detroit page on the dd13. Now you can get a 505 hp and 1850 ft lbs of torque version of the dd13. Yep that's right. That would be the bomb!! I want one now!! I hope this helps you decide. One more thing I have spoken with a mechanic whose fleet tried some dd15s . It didn't take long to go back to the dd13. He said they just don't perform that much better and can't touch the mpg.of
