Hey yall. I'm buying a 2005 KW that has a c15 435hp cat in it with a bad head that's already off. I'm gonna drag it home and I frame it and go through the entire truck to make sure everything is gtg before putting it on the road. I'm going to build it for a bit more hp (550) and hopefully some better fuel mileage. Along with a head and the internals, I'm thinking of turbo and manifold as well and of course PDI tune. They said they can't sell a tune to me if I convert it to single turbo but I've been reading that a lot of people are staying twins. So, question is what other things would you do to it and who's parts would you use?

Not sure if it is mxs, bxs, or nxs yet

If you don't know what parts to replace, I don't think you are qualified to overhaul it. First question I have is, why is the head off? And I mean the real reason not what the salesman told you.

I am more than qualified to do it. I'm not asking which parts to change to do an I frame, I'm asking what else would you do while inframing it. Also, the head is cracked and is why it's off. I'm not getting it from a salesman/dealership so I'm not being misled.

I would give Pittsburgh Power a call for your tune, or just send them your ECM and thy will get you set up. Thy also have tune dealers around the country that can do it.

Single turbo for fuel economy my thoughts.

Could do a cam if you wanted to pull the radiator. Not sure if they use a different one for the lower hp engines or not but I'd bet they do. I did a lot of reading on this 6 months ago and found alot of guys liked the twins with the lower compression cylinder kits. I'm happy with a big single on mine though

Probably cooked the motor and cracked the head.

I have an 05 Columbia with an 04 BXS C15 ACERT. Fantastic motor. 5.8 - 6.5 mpg pulling open deck. Then was with me driving it. I have a driver in it now and he's doing between mid 5's and low 6's. I have no doubt he runs it hard.

Mine was originally a 435hp also. CAT wouldnt uprate it because my tranny has the aluminum bell housing. Said it wouldnt hold the torq. So I back channeled one of the mechanics that works there and he did the uprate for me. 500hp/1875Trq. Immediately saw about a 1 mpg increase in fuel economy. Was getting high 4's to mid 5's before turning it up. Also,.. just a FYI. The BXS is mechanically identical from 435 to 550 HP.

As for the head,.. I over heated mine and cracked the head. I went ahead and had an inframe done. That was at 1.1 million miles. Truck is now at almost 1.6 million and other than an ECM issue,.. it has not been towed or in the shop for a mechanical failure since the inframe. That was about 3 yrs ago. No EGR, No DPF, No DEF,.. no problems. Great engine. As long as you keep your foot out of it,.. doesnt do too bad on fuel. Chances are thats why the head is off.

Twin turbos are fine with me. PITA t work around,.. but if they are already there and working,.. I would keep them.

Depending on what went wrong in the head will probably help you decide if you want twins or a single. If debris hit those turbos it is a no brainier for me on the single. It will more than likely be a MXS. IPD is way to go with pistons and liners especially if going single. The MXS is a mean machine running a 6nz computer with those twins though so don’t let them discourage you. Too bad it wouldn’t be a Bxs they have the same cam gear and cam sensor location as 6nz.

If its an 05,.. chances are good that its a BXS.

Mine is also an 05 and has the BXS.

Yeah, I haven't investigated everything to see why the head cracked. He said he drove it home when he bought it and it was fine. We had a really bad cold spell here and he went out to start it and it was having issues so they started looking and noticed water in the oil I think is what he said so they tore it down and found the head cracked but for 6500 dollars i dont care what cracked it.

I'm not sure if I want to stay compound or go single as what I have seen everyone likes the compound. I talked with pdi and they can't sell me a tune if I convert it.
