I don't think you're considered hired until after your probationary period. Either way it still stinks. Good luck in finding a new job. DH goes in for service today and his probationary period is not up yet, so we're a lil worried after hearing all these stories. We're still in the hiring area, so I guess we'll find out here after while how things go.

 

Well TruckerJosh, as i read it from many that have come from orientation before you, that you arnt really hired till you are done with your trainer and take the final road test---this is what i have gathered and would seem most appropriate

However, they give you a hire date while in orientation - in the 1/5 class we were told our hire date was 1/16. I left orientation after the classroom portion because of a job I was offered back home - I think I'm glad I did.

 

With TMC you don't have a "job" entirely until you have the keys to your assigned truck.

Everyone who takes a job in the trucking business has to realize that you are always a minute away from being unemployed. An accident can happen in an instant, weather a car pulls out in front of you, or a patch of ice ends your career. Don't make long term plans on this industry. In trucking you have the job security of a professional athlete where you are only one wrong move away from a career ending injury. Now in some cases your career ends with one company and you can start with another. In a lot of cases you don't see your career ending more than 5 seconds ahead of time. I had a car hit a patch of black ice and spin out right in front of me a few weeks ago, and I saw possibly my career flash before my eyes, but I ended up with just a scratch on the bumper. Don't let your guard down in this job, and don't go into debt based on your projected earnings for the next 5 years.

 

i have heard that they have been letting people go in michigan because of no freight. They probably felt they could not get you home for time with your family so they choose to let you go. At tmc you dont really have a job till you are done with your trainer and released into your own truck. till then it is a temp position pending the results of you out with your trainer. Dont be a hater, TMC is a good company.

 

Josh....file unemployment anyway....don't believe anything but what they tell you. Period.

 

I think they should update that interactive hiring map on their site.I called this week the recruiter told me hiring not open in NJ right now to call back in 3-4 months to see if they hiring in my area.

 

Wow things changed so quick there. I am from Jersey and about to start my 3rd week with my trainer. Also I know there was another guy from Jersey in the class after me.

 

the economy is changing and you can not fault TMC for changing with the times. I dont blame them on putting freezes on where they cant get drivers home. If they hire you in an area they cant get you home than everyone is on here crying that they can't get home. No one is happy all the time, take what life gives you and roll with it!

 

My husband said the other day that TMC actually isn't hiring anymore really, but are just trying to keep the drivers they have employed.
Its hard times for everyone, even large companies, and at least they are trying to take care of thier own. So far both my husband (who drives) and I (who doesn't...lol) have enjoyed the treatment we have recieved with TMC; he has been working there since October, which granted isn't very long, but I can tell you that it is a big difference already from the last company my husband worked for. Such as: my husband only had to give his Fleet Manager his details once, and that was it, when he calls in, he just says "this is (his name)" and his Fleet Manager knows who he is, whats been happening, and what his goals are. His Fleet manager works to make sure that both I and my husband are happy, and though things dont always work out (such as when he can't get home because a shipper messed up...etc) we can at least say that his Fleet Manager tried, which is more than many others may do, at least in our experience.
So far, I dont have anyhing bad to say about TMC, we are very happy with the company, and when they are able to hire out again, it is certainly one I would recommend to the at-home wives..or family, or whatever. Don't get me wrong, there are always little things that are irritating in the least, but things happen, its how those things are dealt with that matters, and that is where, for at least me, TMC shines, just like thier pretty Peterbuilt trucks
