Do not pay the rental bill until all furn/artwork is inspected for damage, so that you may file a claim for a reduced rental fee.
I would still ask for a reduction for all the trouble you went through.

Oh, believe me, there will be an insurance claim. Penske sent out a much more professional moving company. We insisted that they *not* send the old crew. We opened the door, and our jaws dropped. The guy in charge shook his head and said, ‘I have no words’. Definitely not packed to standards. He has taken lots of photos of how the truck was packed (not), as these movers are all subcontracted out under a bigger moving company.
There *will* be compensation.Bakerman Thanks this. -
A zillion years ago when I was 15, I had a gig where a couple of long haul movers would give me a call and let me know when to meet them at the city limits. I was always on time even though I had to take a bus for over an hour. Learned a lot about what goes on. One time a tv was up high on some boxes, flipped off and landed smashed on the floor. They laughed and said that's what insurance was for. And yeah, both of them always got a kick out of rummaging through the wife's dresser drawers. I always wondered what the husbands would say when they saw dirty man sized hand prints on some of the racier stuff.
Anyhow, I have used movers myself more than a few times over the years. Best bet is to work along side them and that shames them into moving there butts instead of dog fornicating. But anything further than within the same town, I borrow a trailer from wherever I'm leased on with and just hire local movers on each end.
Yeah there's always something broken or scratched or whatever. That's a given with any movers. Some care, some don't. Do not rely on insurance because most places insure by weight. Read the contract carefully first. And always take a good look at the walls and all other places on both ends, and if moving to an apartment building, check everything carefully. Gyprock doesn't like getting furniture rammed into it. Neither do landlords, nor the person that bought your house.
My last move was a chinese fire drill. Lived up the side of a mountain with many tight switchbacks. Couldn't get to the house myself, so the locals used their 5 ton and made a few trips down to me. I had the good common sense to have the nose of my trailer downhill. And I became a God to all the kids in my cul d sac when I backed a 53 right up to the garage and thereby blocking everybody else.
Moving is a #####, be we all gotta do it.jennsunshine Thanks this. -
Yes, I will bet the original grunts were labor ready employees who moved your belongings from truck-truck. But I gotta' ask...why are you moving your mothers stuff across country ? Now you will need to store it and for what reason ? FYI, I'm not a hoarder and hate clutter. Good luck !
