Dash Cams

@flood May I ask which ones you use? I want to get one but need some kind of baseline and positive experience. I don’t know any of the names people are saying, and I don’t want to blow $300-$500 on a POS

 

mine are older Cobra CDR830's

most are about the same just make sure it has GPS. better than 720 video, internal battery, G-shock,

 

mine was beneficial to me on one occasion so far, a few winters ago a farmer was burning brush piles along a secondary highway. the conditions were just right (or wrong?) that the smoke was hanging in the air over the highway cutting visibility to less than 30 feet.

I saw a pair of tail lights in front of me suddenly turn to flashing hazard lights as it approached the smoke and I slowed right down trying to keep them in view. they were crawling along at about 1mph, the only way I could stay in my lane was by rolling down my window and looking at the yellow line beside my steps. and then the inevitable BANG...a dude in a Dodge pickup slammed into my beavertails. I had a log skidder on at the time, overdimensional with 4 ways and strobes all lit up, buddy tried to say I was stopped on the highway.

dashcam showed I had never stopped moving until after he hit me, and that I was restricted to the speed of the vehicle in front of me. I was found not at fault, but the incident went on my carrier profile anyways. because Canada.

footage is from my previous dashcam, a $100 ebay model that claimed to be 720p. make sure you get a minimum 1080HD cam, the low light footage is much better. first video is approaching and going into the smoke, second is when i was struck from behind. can't tell anything hit me from the footage....gotta take my word for it lol.

 

I run a WheelWitness HD Pro... It has GPS, g sensor, motion sensor, records soumd if you want it to, can be turned 90 degrees so you can record interaction with LEO's at your door, and has a super wide angle 170 degree lens, and has multiple video quality and resolution option clear up to 2K HD.... I paid like $129.00 for it and like $30 for the sd card reader. It says it will only support up to a 64 GB micro sd card, but mine works great with a 128 GB micro sd... It doesn't have Wi-Fi but you can buy an sd card reader that will plug into you phone... That's what I use. I also had to download a free video player app as the one that was on the phone stock didn't recognize the video format

I'm looking to get one soon, too. This is what I'm looking at:

Seems pricey compared to a lot of them but opinions are welcome. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and get a good one. Don't want to throw money away either.

I've never had one, so I'm a little confused how it works... if you have an incident or whatever, how do you retrieve the vid?

To retrieve the video you simply turn off the camera, pop out the sd card, and then put it in either a computer or smart phone. Then you will be able to select the video file you want and copy or move it to either the computer or phone. Some cameras you can just hook a data cable up to them and transfers the video to a phone or camera. If the camera is Wi-Fi capable you can do this without removing the card or hooking a data cable between the camera and the phone or computer.

You may have to download a video viewer if the ones on your computer or smart phone doesn't recognize the format of the video file... But there are several free video viewer apps out there.

I would highly recommend a dash cam with 2K HD resolution... Anything lower and it can be difficult to read licence plate numbers of passing cars.

 

not the pricey for a good one....

 

Please don't think about it just to get the dash cam it will save your life
