Drive Shaft

    So I'm under my truck giving her the usual inspection, came across this. The plastic is working out of the slider and it had a pretty good bump (slack) when I picked up on it.

    I assume the whole thing has to be replaced. I'm old school and I am not a fan of this non-greaseable stuff. I like grease fittings. Luckily I don't have a load on, so I just pulled it out today.

    Looks like Meritor. I would not mess with it. Order a new shaft complete or have a driveline shop make you a new one. Interaxle shafts are not crazy expensive. Bolt it in and be done.

    It appears the nylon at the slip splines is worn and broken. There is something to be said about non serviceable parts. They do last quiet a while without even touching them. No grease slinging all over the undercarriage. Time saved not greasing.

    Mayby rust? Non greasable, I read. Heard about a guy that broke that shaft( we call it the jack shaft)in front of walmart at the light taking off from a stop. They looked all over for it. Finally found it up in walmarts parking lot. Cannot believe it didn't hit someone, or a car. I am resting here after greasing my truck. Just the tractor, don't own the trailer. Took me apprx 45 minutes, and that includes airing up tank to do brake adjustment. Like to set them even though they self adjust.

    Rust. Plastic bushing is working out of the slider. It looks to have came apart on the inside.

    Not sure if it is original. 890k on the truck.


    Geez, Freightliner wants $1900 for the complete shaft with the u-joints. Gonna check around Monday before I cough that up.
