2007 Freightliner M2, 28' box. GVWR 26,000. Can I legally raise that? I hold a class A but I'm unsure if I can do it with the truck. Let me explain why.
(This is being planned)want to extend the frame just enough I put a coffin sleeper. I'm already losing my left lane privileges because I'm going to put a second axle on. However, this is weight. She's already just over 13k empty. That's going to hurt my money because I'm losing freight because of the weight. I'm already reinforcing the frame and fitting her with a second 100 gallon tank. As for go-go power there's possiblites of the engine getting the Fast and Furious treatment. Already have a transmission overqualified for everything, I addressed that when the factory one decided it didn't want to be a transmission anymore.
TL;DR Can I legally have her GVWR lidtee from 26,000 to 33,000 or beyond?

A lift axle will allow roughly 7k more in freight I think.....after accounting for the extra weight of the new hardware.
So yes. I am in the same boat. I need another axle behind my tandems.....just for those certain loads...ProfessionalLunatic Thanks this. -
I got no issue with putting the truck up to it, I've done extensive work to ensure it can function safely and last a long time. It's the legal thing. What it's rated for. Is that factory or FMCSA that rated it that way?
-
Ratings come from the factory and are different from legalities. My single screw for example has a 23k rated drive. The law doesn’t allow that though in a tractor.
In your case, you should have no problem registering the truck higher, but I personally wouldn’t advise exceeding the factory rated axle weights with replacing some parts.ProfessionalLunatic Thanks this. -
Ratings come from either the original equipment manufacturer or the body upfitter and can be modified with a little work and the proper paperwork process. The paperwork required varies from state to state and depends upon which state your truck is currently titled in.
Example, here in Pennsylvania we need to document all the work done to increase GVWR with receipts and pictures, have a rebuilt vehicle inspection form completed (MV-426) and submit to PennDOT for a new title and registration upgrade. The hardest part in PA is getting the reconstructed vehicle inspection as only a handful of garages are licensed for this particular inspection.
I would use a company that does truck upfits regularly, maybe a place that installs dump bodies or wrecker bodies as they are very familiar with the incomplete and modified vehicle process, can get you the right paperwork and issue the yellow sticker for your door with the new GVWR and axle weights.Mattflat362 and ProfessionalLunatic Thank this. -
Thanks both. I'll call up my friendly neighborhood NCDOT and find out about that.
I know lol, there's mixed things about modifying a truck to do stuff it wasn't intended too. Though it is my investment, I'm willing to take this risk. I could get myself a big rig. But I like the flexibility of a straight truck too much. Maybe my next investment will be a daycab and a pup trailer... Try and maintain my ability to get where larger trucks can't.Mattflat362 Thanks this. -
I'm putting on my pretend lawyer hat.
Can the truck do it? Sure. But the issue is if something happens and you wind up in an accident. If you are running over the GVWR of the truck, those lawyers you see up on the signs standing on the hood of a truck will be standing on the hood of yours.
If your loads are that heavy get a larger truck. -
Yes you can, no you don't have to do much other than add an axle to it.
BUT because you are doing expedited freight (I'm assuming), you need to understand by the time you dump all that money into the truck, you could have bought another one that is already to go.
Oh and if you have a cat C7, don't bother trying to get any more power out of it.Mattflat362 Thanks this. -
Expedited is my "get me out of here!" resort. I'm in a mood of, I'm after something unique. Custom. I've looked at trucks already up to snuff for what I'm after, but the price tag on those bad boys... Ouch. Verses what I paid for this. Think of it this way. What I paid for this truck would get you a good used car that's 10 years old. Nice mix of it broke, carrier didn't want it. It started taking up lot space. Went up for auction.

Even more to the real world is "routine roadside inspections" and inspection stations. They always look at the GVWR on the door post, so you can register it for more, the tax office is happy to take your money, but you cannot exceed the GVWR as depicted on the door post plate loaded going down the road no matter if the registration says more. That's what you will have to get upgraded before you haul something that will cause that weight to be exceeded. That's my experience anyway.....
