Quiting a mega carrier.

A driver should NEVER tell his company while OUT he is quitting. PERIOD. Always take job actions while on hometime. When a driver does this he is asking for problems. This is why I have said he should never have left that terminal knowing full #### well in 4 days he would be asking them to route him home. A driver should never put himself in that position. If that is not clear enough for you it would seem you lack english comprehension skills.

 

Ya, the one thing I don't get is coming back from home time and accepting a load and agreeing to go out. More than likely he was 99% sure he was quitting before he went on home time.

 

i totally agree with you on proper way to quit. But, in light of how awfully some of these companies treat their drivers I don't have a problem with what op did. What's good for the goose .....

 

This has been the thrust of my argument on this. The OP had 4 days left till his official year was up. He had plans to quit. Had a new job lined up. I see this and I am sensitive to that situation. The hometime did not fully sync up to the remander of the year. However he did not handle it right. All carriers are operating in a tight labor market. Those jobs would have kept. Then go on out and come up with a good bull #### reason to get routed home and be patient. I'm sorry the OP had to go through this. However sometimes in life we have to do things.

 

I have a big time problem with it for all the reasons I stated. No need to rehash them now.

 

I will make my point more politely than an emotionally invested forum member...

...just because a carrier is big doesn't mean they can pull an ideal load out of their ###. A customer has to place an order that a shipper has in inventory, then that customer or shipper has to have a relationship with the mega carrier.

When I worked for Swift I paid attention to the "Bubble Map" every time I got a chance to see one at a terminal. Red bubbles mean more drivers than freight. Green bubbles mean more freight than drivers. The bigger the bubble the bigger the disparity. The map changed constantly. Sometimes the southwest was all red, while the southeast was all green, or vice versa. Get caught in a dead red zone and you could sit for a while.

Another thing about Swift, you can't request home time unless you have been on the road for three weeks since your last home time. It's WELL understood that you give a requested date at least a week away AND that you need to be flexible about the actual date you are routed home. If I understand correctly, OP took home time, then requested home time again a few days after getting back in the saddle. That's a pretty obvious mistake. There's no way Swift or any other large carrier will bend over backwards to do a quick "out and back" for a few days.

If OP was there four days in advance of needing to get out of the truck, then GET OUT OF THE TRUCK right then and there. That's the bottom line. The transportation industry doesn't work like fast food, you can't just order a backhaul with fries.

 

I'm even more confused now after I re read this from the OP from the beginning.

On Saturday he asked how he should quit. I made suggestion of quitting while on home time which he stated he was on his last day of.

Then he returns to work Sunday, but already had a plane ticket purchased for Tuesday the 10th???
