I thought a mill roll was a coil that still had mill scale on it and an irregular thickness?

I’ve hauled coils what I thought was called “finished coils” which is something that’s ready for production. Sometimes coated or painted and much thinner usualy.

This was just my understanding but I could be totally wrong! I’m fairly new to this buissness and steel is not my mainstay.

I saw it coming up behind me right away. Never seen one with a sleeper before. Looked like an aftermarket sleeper unit but couldn’t tell who’s?

The guy had fixed up nice with full fenders, saddle boxes and that nice headache rack.

I though they only came with the international motor in them? Looks same cab shell as my 9200i international.

It was just interesting and thought I’d share.

They are/were an International, you could get an ISX in them. They were daycab only.

They're the precision machined rolls that form rolled steel in a steel mill (coils). If they get gouged or dinged, they go out for repair or replacement.

They look like a rolling machine Arbor....which essentially they are just ALOT bigger.

I've done a fare amount of work on rolling machines and built a few die accelerators to go on them. They can be a bit finicky.

You may be wrong... but you may very well be right!

Any "hot rolled" steel, whether its sheet (or coiled sheet), bars, or channels, all have mill scale on them. The grade of steel will determine the composition and amount of mill scale, and every hot rolled steel has a thickness tolerance range. 99.9% of what I use is hot rolled steel.

Cold rolled steel is made the same way as hot rolled steel (often with significantly different properties), except that it gets further processed to remove the mill scale. I'm wondering now, if your "mill roll", is steel that is slated for finishing to become "cold rolled" or "cold finished" when its complete.

Next time you haul some, ask about it! Learn something every day!
