I’m about to buy a truck to start hotshotting...I’m looking at the Dodge 5500 and I was curious if either the short wheel base of 173.4” or the longer wheel base of 197.4 would work best? I think the shorter wheel base would get around better in tight spots but maybe the longer wheel base would handle the weight better? Any thoughts on the matter?

Other things to consider. Longer wheel bases normally ride better and are more controlable in adverse conditions You mentioned nothing about the cab. If trailer pin-ball is to close to the cab on a short wheel base it may reduce turn radius. Trailer hits back corner of cab.

Dont the longer wheelbase trucks also come with a larger fuel tank?

Yes some do. I have a 96 long bed with twin tanks. Also remember a Ford camper special 360 P/U. It had one tank behind the seat and a filler cap on each side of the bed. I thank you a correct on the newer models. Never noticed any options on fuel tanks. Asked Ford about getting a cab and chassis. I wanted fuel tank in front of axle. Bought a Dodge.

The 2 wheelbase's he tossed out are for the crew cab C&C. Short is 60" cab axle & long is 84". Both have the same standard 52 fuel, with optional 74gal.. Both will have no issue with cab clearance for gooseneck. 60" will be real tight with a mini step deck, & probably hit if you put a gear box or aux fuel cell behind the the cab.. Go long and get the better ride. Truck will still turn fine. They have wide track front axles. More room for boxes or little sleeper. They look way cooler too..
