Also, long haul might not be necessary. Some people look for independent contractors that own vans or trucks.

I tried a company that specialized in running pharmaceuticals and office supplies using contractors that owned vans or box trucks dropping off stuff to drug stores or other small businesses. I think the drugs were from McKesson.

Check Craigslist for Box Truck or Medical Courier. Sometimes clinics have things shuttled to labs like blood work, drug screens, or even biopsies. The backhaul might be supplies like syringes, alcohol wipes,

Another possibility is running U.S. Mail. I'm not sure how to get in to that, but I've seen a company out of Green Bay moving mail in Class B trucks.
