    I was tuning a 6 foot skip shooter the other day and couldn’t get a radio check with three truck stops within two miles of me. Nowadays, that’s normal with garbage coax and factory antennas. Then, I was on channel 28 setting the swr’s and a guy came back said I was sounding good in Charlotte, NC. (625 miles, not bad for a barefoot radio and the truck not even running).

    Skip’s been rolling like crazy this week. Built a bird 43 meter for about half price, gonna get it all lined out and start working DX again in the mobile.

    Sure. All you need is a beefier alternator for the extra 120 amps draw, 2 gauge or 00 gauge welding style cable. Run the positive cable to the battery and fuse it within a few inches of battery post. Then run the ground to the battery that is frame grounded or to a cleaned off spot on the frame (bare metal).

    As long as the antenna is grounded and the 6 pill has a good input and output tune, reflect should be minimal. If it interferes with anything bleeding off the coax, a few ferrite snap on chokes can be applied to the coax ends and bam, time to get your numbers called. Your starting out with a much more ideal truck than the plastic junk.

    @snowman_w900

    This (cough) guy I know, ran a 2x4 in his patrol car. He ran a piece of 4 gauge wire from the front battery to a battery he put in the trunk, then took the trunk battery and grounded it to the frame through a hole in the floor pan. He had the amp wired up to the rear battery. He ran a Wilson 5000 trunk lip mount with two little Allen screws screwing into the bottom of the trunk lip where he scraped the paint off for metal to metal contact.

    That setup didn’t bother anything in his car and kicked ### on local and dx. Same guy took a 4 pill in a 2013 plastic nightmare Volvo daycab, put a 80 watt radio driving it, wired the amp straight to the battery and the ground to the negative side battery that was frame grounded, and talked all over the country with ease. Low reflect numbers on both setups, error and problem free operation, and fairly simple installs. He likes a clean setup so the most time intensive part is pulling the panels to hide wiring and making it look good.
