I'll try to be specific with my issue. I am having a severe SWR issue. The vehicle is a fiberglass motor home. The antenna is a 4' Firestik. I have it mounted on the side of the RV with a side mount. I did not buy the side mount and Firestik as a kit. The side mount is not a Firestik product. It is a WORKMAN PSM-2 .
My understanding, after a lot of agonizing research, is that there is a difference between the Workman side mount and the Firestik MK-M@ side mount. Currently the lowest reading I can get is about 2.75 to 1. Is there in fact a difference and if so what is the difference. I am willing to buy the "correct" side mount but I'd like to know just what the difference actually is ??
Thanks for any help.

You need a no ground plane antenna system. Had the same issue on my RV
flood and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Before you do a thing, get over to a shop that has an antenna analyzer and have them look at the system. You may need to tune the antenna first.
-
The fiberglass body is the problem. Check this and you'll see what I mean.
Miniature dipole or NGP antenna is the solution unless you gut the interior and line the fiberglass with copper or aluminum foil.
-
Or run a 9' piece of wire from the mount out over the body of the camper/RV and secure it. THEN check/tune the antenna. The issue is prob'ly the lack of ground. In a mobile antenna, the whip is only half the system. I don't think the Firestik will help that much unless you correct the ground issue first. If the wire makes a difference, you'll know that that is the trouble.

As I noted in my initial post I am using a NGP antenna (Firestik) so while fiberglass is a potential issue in some cases, it is not in this case.
Ground is not the problem. I have grounded the radio itself and I ran a small (6" ) piece of 12 gauge wire from the ground stud of the side mount to a metal piece of the frame.
So I am still trying to find out the difference between the side mount I am using (Workman PSM-2) versus a Firestik MK-M2 mount -
Gadfly was referring to an RF ground, since that is what your antenna is missing. Go ahead and give it a try just for testing purposes, it may work. Of course the coax is suppose to be part of the RF ground on a NGP antenna, so it might not work either, but you won't know unless you try. -
2 fifferent types of ground...You need ground plain not electrical..
That piece of wire going from ant stud to frame is if anything adding electrical length to your antenna.......Try bonding which is short 12" or less wide braided straps...your trying to bond parts of your camper together to simulate 1 big piece as your ground plain..Although i have my doubts it will do much.. -
A couple points.
First off those are the same mounts, they are made at the same plant in China and packaged per the branding requirements.
Second I will AGAIN "SUGGEST" before you do a thing, find someone with an antenna analyzer and have the antenna checked.
A ground may be an issue but rule out the antenna first, not monkey around with all these solutions that may not help.handlebar and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Ridge, I agree with your advice. It is the best way to go, but if the OP doesn’t know anyone with an analyzer, that makes it more difficult. It would only take him about 20 minutes to try Gadflys advice. It would at least possibly give him a clue as to what to do.
