I had a Rand McNally Truck GPS TND 740 with Magnetic mount. $399.99. Avoid any truckers GPS system with a magnetic mount. With these bad roads all around the Nation it just bounces off the mount constantly. Doesn't get a good connection to the mount from constantly disconnecting to posts on mount. falls to floor or slides down between dash and windshield. it is a accident waiting to happen. From falling off mount so much it stopped working. It gets its power from the mount. doesn't sit on mount good from rough roads. It will be on mount but be running on battery due to bad connection. I will never buy a GPS with magnetic mount again. Problem is all the ones I see at the truck stops seem to be magnetic mounts. Anybody know of Truck GPS that is selling today that doesn't use magnetic mounts?

I had to replace my garmin gps recently. I avoided buying their (garmin’s) latest generation just for that reason. I got one of the last of the previous generation that still had the latch quick release system.

And getting off of the magnet is just going to stress the suction rubber

I have a RM with magnetic mount, I have it low on the windshield so that it just touches the dash, that way it never falls off

Use that thick foam double sided tape or Velcro and it won't fall off.

Why do you want to defeat the "quick release" option? Last thing you want is a GPS where you have to remove the suction to remove the device (to prevent theft or to more comfortably work with it)

I like my top corner position. It keeps out most direct sun and heat, easier to access and hear. Easy to activate the quick-release button, etc. But if the suction fails, it’s a long fall.

In my Cascadia I implemented a “safety rope”. If the suction fails, it will just hang there, plus it mitigates a lot of shock loading against the suction, from major road dips.

I solved the problem. Bought a Rand McNally TND 540. It's not magnetic mount power supply. It's grooved slot slide on with bigger suction window mount. Power supply cord plugs into side of GPS. It's also smaller than that big monitor of the TND 740. It was $100 cheaper to. Much Much better. Love it.

  10. You can use the the cardboard from roller dogs of death.

Place behind unit and post. Keeps heat off GPS unit.

They are free and you can use more than one. It's a curved heat shield.
