Kohler Is making an APU for trucks that is diesel powered and weighs 300 lbs and change,
My truck has a TK unit which is largely non-operable (has 2700 hours on it)and weighs double that, personally, i prefer to let the sound of the main engine lull me to sleep.

Just about every body and their brother makes one now or is planning to come out with one. The hard part is figuring which is better.

Yes and,or keeping the blasted things working, the alternator is out on mine, has been out for a long time, and I can't use it unless I add in a battery charger to keep the voltage up, and risk burning myself up in the process. Every time it freezes, the cover loose switch has to be reset, the blower howls and whines and unless you keep it on high speed, which howls and whines even more, it won't keep the temp constant.
I have seen one of these fiberglass beauties catch fire and burn to a pile of twisted metal with the engine, transmission and drives poking out of the ashes, it does happen. Adding a battery charger seems simple enough, but not when I'm sleeping in the darned thing. As for getting it fixed, in the winter we run the main engine anyway to keep from having a service call to get it going.
What matters most with APUs is warranty, if it doesn't work, who fixes it, or who pays for fixing it. I would also rather see them use 3 cylinder engines less vibration and quieter than the twins they have been using. Yanmar has made them for years and so has Kubota, though the Kubota engines have been made in many configurations. -
what brand of apu is the best? looking for the most quality i can get for the price.

Go with a Thermo King. You won't regret it.
-
Don't buy a Rigmaster (like I have) ... they just went out of business.
-
thanks, in my mind it was a tosss up between thermo king and carrier . but thanks for the ilnput. thermo king it is.
-
Thermo King is more money than a Pony Pack. Just add the www and the .com.
They are louder than I like, but I believe that can be fixed with a better muffler.
The owner is a small business owner former trucking O/O. I would rather do biz with him than with a big company. Most of their parts are easily bought at NAPA etc. The ones that aren't will be shipped UPS and arrive pretty fast from them.
The owner is CEO, sales and fills in every where else. His wife is the secretary and he has two to three other guys working manufacturing and what ever else needs done. -
OR, just do it REDNECK style, i got a honda generator and know i just need to get a portable heater and a window a/c and i will be set.
already have a large inverter for all my stuff. -
I like the night system just xtra batteries and an inverter no noise and no maintenance the first ones didn't cool all that well but they have been upgraded
