I ran it in reverse once, more or less, from Baltimore to northeast IN with a Hazmat load . I 68 is nasty in Maryland but drivable in WV. I wouldn't consider going another way to avoid the Turnpike.
-
If you're up around gross, I 68 will turn your truck into a dragonfly! Drag uphill, fly downhill. But it is passable. Then bottom line is anyway you choose to detour will cost you in time and money. The last time I drove the PA TP, I paid between $55-70 (can't remember exactly how much) to go from Carlisle(ex 226, I think) to Monroeville/Pittsburgh(ex 57), and I was around 78500-79000. So to Philly, you can expect to pay even more, but it is still worth it, IF they will reimburse you.
Good Luck! -
Does anybody have a good idea how should I route myself from DuBois, PA (on I-80), to Chambersburg, PA? Looking for info on passible way. Thanks
-
Probably 322 all the way to harrisburg then 81 south. According to google its an extra 70 miles over the direct route but I'm not familiar with the route to tell you if its good for a truck. I know 322 is fine and mostly a 4 lane divided highway once you get over the mountain past state college.
Jacoooooooo Thanks this. -
Thanks. That’s what I was thinking. My gps after some route shaping seems to also entertain the idea of going US522, but I can’t find good enough info on that route.
-
Do not take those roads direct to Chambersburg. You need to come in from 81.
It is the same distance whether you go to Harrisburg then down or drop down 99 across 70 and up 81. Either way is fine. 80 to exit 123 south to 322 east all the way to duncannon then 81 south
Or
Same route 80 exit 123 instead follow pa53 to i99s to us30e to i70e all the way to 81 and come up.
Few good spots are Sapp at 120 or bbq place at 123 or ac&t in md i81 exit 5 (west)Jacoooooooo Thanks this. -
US 322 features a major downgrade of about 7 miles more or less. At Seven Mountains. Duncannon puts you onto US 15 which is essentially Harrisburg North. Urban area by the river. You will fight scratch kick and struggle to get across that part of PA without the pike.
Best thing to do? Pull cash out of your pocket, pay the #### thing and roll it. I have.
I 30 in the region of Breezewood is not fun, nor is Altoona recommended. You are crossing mountain ridges one by one in your face as you fight to get to Philly on the coastal plain.
Tell your company you are better off on the pike so they can spend a dollar and make sure that truck is there. That's one of the biggest reasons they built that pike in the first place. The military could not deploy west or from the west in a timely manner. That's one of the reasons that particular road was built.
You are going to burn so much fuel, incur so much accident risk, combined with mountain work. (Easy as pie to me, but to outsiders not used to it? Whoo are you going to be out of hours by Philly and the traffic there is epic.
There is no point in attempting to show how you can get a big truck across that part of the USA without the pike, one bad turn and that's it you are lost.
If it was me coming out of Ohio, I would run 68, hit that 70 across Maryland and up 95/495 into Philly. There is 5 simple passes on I-68 and more on I-70 but not as ferocious as you will fight across PA. Essentially burn a dollar in fuel to bypass most of the banned Pike Road because your STOOPID COMPANY REFUSES TO SPEND A DOLLAR.
Thank god this is summer time. God help you if this was winter.heyns57 Thanks this. -
How about 522 down to 30 and than east?
Won’t do? I know about the 13’2” bridge on US30. I will be able to clear. -
