There are still quite a few that leave the radio on. But they have developed a mental "noise filter" from all the BS that can happen. They are usually there when you have a good question to ask like, where is a good place to stop around here? is this route ok? Whats a good way to get here?
Never ask for a radio check!... All too often I hear the same person ask for a radio check every time they hear someone talk. 20 min later they hear someone talking and they ask for a radio check again, and agian 20-30 min later. Don't be that person, instant ignore.![]()

It is better to ask for a radio check when no one is yacking on it.
-
I don't think so. Personally, I ignore any "radio check" because it gets abused so much. Maybe I'm just in a bad/jaded mood alot.
I'm sure there are legit reasons for a radio check. If someone mentions it is a new radio or antenna, or something has changed then that's reasonable. But so many people don't have anything to say but "radio check", it gets old. You will see.
buddyd157 Thanks this. -
I've been out here about 15 years, the things that do get old and jaded is these "c.b. rambos", "I got no panties on", and so on. Asking for a "radio check" will never go out of style.skellr Thanks this.

The CB Radio is more of a liability than a asset. I still have my Uniden PC76xl from my trucking days. (Won at gambling in LA near Calhoun off I-20, went across street and bought it cash flat at the cb shop there. It has never failed me or us) That was probably the one time LA ever paid anything on video poker. They usually take all your money.
Anyway.
I have had run with the CB on and we are not on 19 when running together with other company trucks. The CB is usually on low for me. HOWEVER in developing situations like that one oncoming car in my lane with a head on crash against me and my flatbed load in a few moments my number one radioed a warning to me. THAT was enough time and space to get that truck out before we crashed together probably killing them and me. (Or worse) It would not be the first or last time that radio has been timely.
But in general the radio is a liability if you are in a meat plant one night and some girl is trolling for company, if some driver was stupid enough to take her up on it 4 unmarked cars descend to take that trucker away. And that will be the end of the evening's festivities.
Or the Drug dealing and open hooking among other problems in say Jessup Md at night. You would think with all that filth pouring out of the radio I should stand in shame for the entire trucking industry going so bad. I'll simply turn it off.
It really does not matter what you do when you use something to communicate with people. Who pour filth and trash right all over you. Either in a CB radio, gaming room within a game or on discord or other sites that does not regulate such crap from people all over the internet.
That is one big reason I left facebook behind. It is the ultimate when it comes to being negative and outright hostilities from those who do not simply disagree with your ideas or views but seek to stomp you out and destroy same. In the light of evolving laws that begin to prosecute people for hiding behind a keyboard etc it has become something that has no value in my home.
There are still some things useful with the radio. However it's something that has had it's day and we have evolved away from it. I understand you can talk to others around you over traffic with certain apps on your smart phone now to crowd solve a sudden closure of a major highway or something. I choose not to participate in things like that. There is a limit to my "Being sociable" to use a term when out in public.
With that said, I still have the radio on the corner table. It is a reminder of what it was once. And when balanced against itself on scales of good or bad, I have to say it was not only good to me but very good to the dozen or so lives that I managed to save from their own stupidity because someone saw something bad about to happen and told me about it in time for me to solve the problem.
Also when on Sandstone (I-64) that radio is very important because in winter sometimes people screw up and get really hurt needing help. It's best to have it and get the word before you come steaming over the summit unaware that your side is closed and covered in bodies and wreckage on ice and snow. -
I don't mind the rambos. Some of them old timers liked to stirr things up to get the blood pumping to stay awake. They, used to, have a style to it. You would know if they were just stirring the pot for fun, or if they has some issues to work out.

Ignore Widowmaker. There is a lot of garbage. I’m not an immigrant, and I can still hear the racist people. So whether you’re born here, immigrate legally or “illegally,” it’s still broadcasted over the air. Radio propagation is independent of citizenship status, in contrast to widowmaker’s foolish comment.
