I haul a load for them every now and then when they will meet my rate. I only deal with one guy, no matter which office has the load posted. He told me if I would haul more for them, I could become a core/carrier. According to him I would be able to see loads earlier, the core carriers see loads before none core carriers do.

I told him no thanks, I have no desire to book cheap loads days in advance. He just laughed and said, call me when you see something you are interested in, I know you don't work cheap!!

CHR has 3 or 4 different classifications for carriers that they work with. Core, Key, Managed and something else I forgot what they call it. It's based on the level of business your company does with them and how much you utilize their app in the process. Key and Core are what you might call higher tiered I guess? These are companies that do multiple loads monthly some of them maybe exclusively load up only with CHR but not necessarily all of them classified as such do so. The freight isn't always garbage like you would assume. Actually they have plenty of freight for these classifications of carriers that never see's the light of day on a public spot load board. It might have higher insurance requirements or have other special needs. Might even be just run of the mill contract freight. Managed carriers are typically 1 truck independents who are managed by a CHR agent and kept busy. Guys that do it don't do too bad. They will definitely keep the empty miles down. CHR is not a bad company. They've been in the business for 115 years or more. They know how to cover freight. If you can make a decent connection there (which is not always easy to do) they're a good brokerage to work with.

Yeah, key & core levels aren't for the one man dog & pony show who does the occasional load and offers no level of capacity.

I talked to the head honcho in the NW office about all of their levels about 2.5 years ago. What they were offering me on the lane I operate on was nothing to write home about.

Which is precisely why I run 1 load every couple of mos. for them, maybe.

I've had my authority for 90 days, and have booked exactly ONE load with CHR during that time. Dry van, 45,500 lbs, 67 miles, $700. Picked at 19:00, dropped at 10:00 next day, 1 mile from my house.

It was heavy, but it wasn't cheap.
