I have been told, years ago employees were able transfer while keeping seniority but as with many other things over the years with this company, this option is no longer available.

I have also been told that if a newly built service center takes away a portion of work (territory) from an existing center, employees following the work from the existing service center could transfer to the new center and retain their seniority.

Seniority covers both city and linehaul for us also.

Yep. That was CCX and Conway. Not under Xpo.

So, in reading the replies to this, XPO would rather lose a driver than let him transfer if the barn he wants out of is not fully staffed, or if he had an incident or two. Obviously, he is still qualified to work there but not to transfer. With it being hard to get drivers I would think they would allow a transfer before having them just quit and go to another company because an event in their life is making them move to a different town.

What is the logic behind that? I get losing seniority when transferring, that is the price you pay, plus it is not fair to the guys already comfortable in their bid to lose it to an outsider, even if they are from within the company. Keeping pay scale and vacation makes sense also. I can also understand if the barn you want into isn't hiring at the moment, but if they are hiring off the street and you need to move, why not allow the transfer regardless of your current barns staffing? You are leaving anyway, might as well protect their investment in you and allow you to go to another barn.

I never had to deal with this, never worked LTL and my car haul was with a small company or as an owner operator. The only union job I ever had, Local 445, didn't have another location to transfer to, so I never had to deal with it. Yes, I know XPO is non-union (except for a handful of barns) but the principles seem the same from LTL to LTL. Not being a smart arse, just trying to learn about LTL, especially now that my baby brother is doing LTL. Want to be sure he isn't getting the shaft. He likes what he is doing, seems well paid.

There’s a certain amount of time and effort spent by management to prepare to bring on a new employee and I believe the associated costs with hiring new employees comes out of the individual service centers budget. So to spend the time and money to hire a new employee and then allow them to transfer away without some kind of authorization, the center would be losing out on their investment, in a sense.

I understand what you say about why not let a guy transfer and keep a good driver in our system versus not letting them transfer and have them quit anyway.

Some areas seem like they have a more difficult time getting qualified drivers, for a number of reasons I would imagine,as some of our locations are offer hiring bonuses as a way to draw more applicants in. If those centers let a guy transfer out, it may be quite sometime before they get a viable replacement. Not that the answer will always be “no”, as the staffing situation may improve in the future and the transfer would probably be approved.

The temporary transfer seems to be the company’s effort of being somewhat sympathetic to employees personal situations. You have the opportunity to take care of business somewhere else, short term, and the service center doesn’t lose out on an employee.

They don’t care. Plain and simple. The decisions being made now are strictly based on money, that’s it.
