Do mega companies put new drivers in challenging situations?

I’m curious to know if trucking companies put new drivers into situations where an incident is likely to occur. The reason I ask is because I got put on Walmart account at swift delivering to nj and pa mainly Philly metro area. It has been challenging compared to otr which I was doing. I deal with a lot more with congested areas than before as well as making tight turns in local traffic. Not to mention when delivering to stores I have to drive through narrow alleys
to get to loading docks. Also I have car traffic to contend with entering and exiting. Plus some of the docks I back into are right near where cars park and enter and exit so I need to be extra vigilant to make sure I don’t hit one of them. I have a feeling Swift is testing me to see if I screw up. I always do find a way to make it through the day though. And some of the stores are better than others.Doing otr was mainly interstate driving whereas this is mainly local driving. Tight turns/narrow passages/heavy car traffic etc. I’m not sure if I want to stay on Walmart or not I’ll see how things play out. The way I look at it this will help prepare me for what I want to move on to once I have more experience. Once I have between 2-3 years experience I want to drive gas tanker. And driving through tight areas will probably help prepare me as some gas stations are rather small plus they also have heavy car traffic to watch out for as well.

That's just the daily life of a truck driver haha. Seriously though, sounds like a pretty typical situation for NY. Always hated going up there but you should get used to it. It'll make your transition into a local tanker gig very easy.

Wadhams Enterprises Inc. can get you started in tankers now. Very unlikely you'll bump a car in their tanker division. They're headquartered in New York. They hire new cdl grads, so you're probably ok.

The experienced drivers know which deliveries to avoid so the newbie who doesn't know any better or doesn't have the pull to turn down loads gets those.

I think this happens regularly but for different reasons then you might suspect. It happens because seasoned drivers did that crap early in their career, got enough of it, and moved on where they would not have to deal with it often anymore. So yes, megas do a lot of that "crappy freight" and they also have mostly inexperienced drivers to work with, so it stands to reason they are going to see a lot of these difficult loads .... because those who did it before are long gone to get away from the high frequency of crappy loads, as you will be too if you stick around a while and turn out to be reasonably good.

I did those crappy loads early in my career and I learned a lot in a short period of time doing them. It quickly weeds out the drivers with natural skills and talent and ability to learn, from those who just don't have "the right stuff".

Not at a mega like Swift. You got put on that because you are new and nobody else wants to do it. Challenges are part of trucking. Suck it up and get the job done.

I can verify though that at smaller companies, where drivers are known on a first name basis and by most or all the office staff, they discuss who best to send on certain jobs, and who to avoid sending. I'm sure megas do it too, but more electronically by looking at driver records.

#7030 Pottsville? You more than likely got put on that account to help out because they are short on people, not enough "quality drivers" working it. Northeast, jersey, Philly, area blows. who in their right mind would want to work it.

There is also the Bedford pa location that services Baltimore, DC metro area. Sadly, they booted out the pumpkin in favor for CEVA, who is averaging 2+ wreck trailers a day, so..... It's actually an easier area in my opinion.

Pottsville has been short on drivers since it opened.

Next time swift sends you a load, do not except it until you Google the route, and facilities. If you know it sucks just don't except it. Just remember, the east coast, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis, Nashville, and Dallas, are the busiest and worst places to deliver to. So dont except those.
