A driver with a diagnosis of hypertension on treatment should have at least an annual certification.
A CMV driver with a Blood pressure (BP) 140/90 may be certified for 2 years.
First time BP elevated:
Stage 1 - BP 140-159/90-99 Certification Period 1 year
Stage 2 - BP 160-179/100-109 Certification Period 3 months as one time certification. Within the 3 months, if the blood pressure is below 140/90, the driver may receive 1 year certification.
Stage 3 - BP Reading >180/110 Disqualified. When the blood pressure is less than 140/90, the driver can be certified at 6 month intervals.

I was wrong, it wasn't the FMSCA. It was for everybody. I wonder what will happen on our side of the fence as this is pretty serious. I just had a new med card done in may and was under the old guidelines, and got a 2 year card. But according to the new recommendations, I should have gotten only a 1 year card.

Interesting the FMCSA hasnt addressed this.

Highlights

• High blood pressure is now defined as readings of 130 mm Hg and higher for the systolic blood pressure measurement, or readings of 80 and higher for the diastolic measurement. That is a change from the old definition of 140/90 and higher, reflecting complications that can occur at those lower numbers.
• In the first update to comprehensive U.S. guidelines on blood pressure detection and treatment since 2003, the category of prehypertension is eliminated.
• While about 14 percent more people will be diagnosed with high blood pressure and counseled about lifestyle changes, there will only be a small increase in those who will be prescribed medication.
• By lowering the definition of high blood pressure, the guidelines recommend earlier intervention to prevent further increases in blood pressure and the complications of hypertension.

We've all heard it before but in case anyone forgets: try and eat smaller portions, walk as much as possible,lay of soda(all kinds) and obviously don't drink coffee prior to being monitored. Watch salt intake from processed and fast foods. Read labels, and if it's a genetic condition, last resort is lisinipril or another rx, generic bp med are very inexpensive. Once your md determines the proper dosage, ask for a 90 day supply. Anytime we consume salt, we retain water and it makes the heart work harder to push blood through swollen tissue= high bp. We can all handle this if we pay attention.Ok im of my soapbox!

 

As far as being required to be diagnosed or treated by a designated provider: if you are already complaint with cpap treatment it might not be acceptable. I've run into this issue and provided a letter of compliance during my dot physical that covers use, diagnosis, monitored compliance and the determination that an additional sleep study is not necessary. They call my DR and his coordinator and ive never had an issue. I dont drive a pumpkin truck either. But if your sleep physician gets on the phone with your company doctor and explains everything, I dont see why they wouldn't agree with each other. It's sad but nobody wants to take any responsibility with all of the law suits associated with lawyers targeting truck drivers. I use NASTC. Natl assoc of small trucking companies for compliance. Ask for Skip Williams and he can help you with any problems. Its unfortunate that some providers attempt to extort money imo from us, but NASTC is not one of them.

 

Slight change of discussion. What are company trucks governed at?

 

It actually isn't life long for some people. I lost 72 pounds and my most recent study (2 weeks ago) came back negative for obstructive sleep apnea. Granted, I still have a ways left to go at 294. The doctors really want me under 200 even though I am 6'4"

 

I am restarting my driving career at Schneider. Going to go tanker as I really don't want to deal with a box.
