hello everyone, my husband spoke with me last night about him going to school for conway, i believe down in joplin. he mentioned this site which hes been visiting so i thought i'd take some time & research.... hearing about conway laying off scares me being we'd have to take out 1900 out of savings to cover cost. he did mention there was no up front contract. but does this mean he will have a job after school or is he better off with a contract guaranteeing he does have a job after school assuming he does graduate. i dnt expect to be problem being hes ex-military of 7 years, hard working not to mention stubborn in the sense he doesnt give up on things once started. any input would be appreciated he was told school has an opening i believe on the 25th of feb & they need to know soon what we want to do, my biggest concern is,would be the time we'll be apart & will he be able to get the miles to pay the bills, but since hes not working now & was self -employed & not bing able to draw unemployment, anythings better than nothing.

One thing you might want to consider is that contrary to popular belief the contract does not guarantee employment. Most of the time you have to sign a dual contract meaning that you are saying to the school if I come here on a contract with the comp. and do not get hired or stay long enough for them to pay you off then I am responsible to pay you (the school) off. Also with a contract with most companies if you do not stay with them for a year then you owe them or whoever they sell the loan to.

My mother has a friend in sales at ConWay. From what she was told last week at a little get together is that ConWay is laying off and plans to close some terminals. They are in the process of laying off much of the sales dept along with drivers and the reported closings of some terminals. Her friend has been with ConWay for around 10 or 15 years. Not looking good over there, as there is very little freight to move.

To be honest with you, I would not recommend anyone go into trucking at this time. I have been out here much of my adult life and have never seen it this bad. And when I say bad, I am saying nightmarish!

If he is a vet, I would look at some other field. I know the military has other programs in regards to education. I would seriously recommend looking into another line of work. Good luck!

From what I have heard is the layoffs are on the LTL side and not so much the Long haul side. I just was accepted to school for them and will be going to the one in Oklahoma. I am ok if things are really slow out there since I have no expenses of any kind nor am I married. So, for me I can handle this slow time. If they did lay me off after getting hired on at least I got a CDL for a reasonable price. Since there is no contract that means he is not required to drive for them for a certain amount of time. However, even companies who have contracts still do not guarantee a job after school. From what Christine (main lady for longhaul recruiting) has told me is that I will not be officially hired until I passed everything they required at orientation. Once I get the all clear I will sign on with Conway and then I am an employee. Then off to training with a trainer. I have talked to a few of the Longhaul truckers here at a local truck stop and they were telling me they were still doing 2500-1800 miles a week. I guess you and your husband should just sit down and decide if you two can handle the slow times or a possible layoff.

It's not that hard. And most places will allow a retest the same day, for a price ;)

MO CDL permit test isnt that hard. One thing, there are a few review questions in each section of the manual... I cant recall a single one of those questions being on the test.
