My buddy at land Star finds that to be both. What he loves and hates about them. Loads are on the boards all day. Trying to find a cheap freight hauler. (sometimes more than one day.) Then at 4pm there calling him with a good rate. But you gotta go get it right now, it' already late.

I will try and keep all this good information close to my vest.

Who knew after 30 years as a Broker and fleet owner, the intricacies would still be too complicated for me to understand. Maybe there's an app you could recommend so I can study up on it? Or maybe I should just go back to being a CFO for a fleet small fleet/broker. Maybe someone in the 200-300 truck range til I get better at it....

Thanks for being helpful on the forum. If you need anything let me know.

Why some guys keep hauling cheap freight then? Is it the fear of not having another option? Or just bad business owners?

Then what’s your suggestion on how to base you estimated minimum rate?

    When you are faced with:
    1. Stiff weekly truck note
    2. Possibility of sitting
    3. Fear of spearheading to reposition
    4. Lack of negotiation skills
    5. Inability to say "NO"
You end up being a cheap load puller

    Not always...

I dare anyone to try and negotiate on a lumber load going in a 53' van to L.A. out of somewhere like Roseburg, OR ;-)

    Ain't happening...

Either the sub hauls it for $1,000 or less, or take a hike.

There's a plethora of guys (including megas) who have been bending over on that lane for years and years. All in the name of getting that "great paying" load out of Cali coming back up.

I gave those brokers/buyers/shippers the finger a long time ago. I just refuse to haul anything that is termed "backhaul."

You’re right. Maybe the term “Backhaul” is what keeps those rates so low. And the truckers who accept them.
