Thanks Scarecrow for the detailed information. I guess there are different trains of thought on deadheading...personally I think flatbedding requires a little more deadheading than Vans. I'm thinking maybe Landstar or Mercer. What do you think?
What about CRST Malone?

I think you'd have better luck with them than CRST. Landstar pays a lot better. broncrider is leased on to them right now and he's doing pretty good, all things considered. His thread "Here we go....Finally an O/O" has a lot of info on it about his adventures. There's also a whole bunch of BSin' that goes on over there, but just search through his posts and you'll be able to sort through the BS. That thread has basically turned into a chat thread with little to no topic.

i was with crst malone in 2008 .. i loved it there . the only reason i left was my dang truck went kaboom lol ... my dispatcher was very good to me tha hole time ! u find ur own freight not just agents ..
Crotts Trucking, volvodriver01, slick9802 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Well I have just finished my 2nd day of class at malone and so far they seem to be straight about their stuff. but it could also be alot of bs I was going to lease on with land star but i dont want to get haz mats. I can tell you that you better have all your paper work in order before you come they go over it with a fine tooth comb.

my best advice is to keep in contact with ur dispatcher dis helps greatly .. thay give u a list of agents and partner agents call them when u load let them know when will be there to empty .. in a couple days ill try and post the best agents to call and states to try and keep away frum .. just as soon as i can get another truck ill be headed to malone again

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR INFO ON CRST MALONE. I WILL NOT LEASE FROM THEM,BUT AM CONSIDERING DRIVING FOR ONE OF THERE OWNER OPS.
-
I would only do it if the guy who's leased to them has been there for a while and knows how to get the loads. My step dad (who isn't a driver) bought a truck and asked me to drive it. We put it on with them and never made any money. There was lots and lots of deadhead and lots of time waiting between loads. Some guys my step dad knows who had been leased there for several months or even a few years never had the problems we did.
I kept begging my step dad to put the truck on with another outfit doing something I was more familiar with, but he didn't want to so I ended up quitting.

When working for the #1 bottom-feeder having the right attitude is important. Better get used to bending over and breaking every rule. You will still make out better than the Fleace (CRE etc), but with crappier equipment. It's really a toss-up and a matter of will and channel of focus.
-What a bunch of crap I just said. Bottom-feeder all the way baby!! -
i was leased to crst for about 2 years here is the deal with the agents . you want to deal with atlanta, gary in, buffalo,ny , pittsburg, pa ok city, ok tulsa, ok, washington, mo, newton,ks, dallas,tx, eldrige, ia, dont book loads out of trussville,al where the corporate office the rates realy suck, but the agents i listed i was adv. app. 1.95 to 2.75 per mile before fsc. you realy need to get friendly with the agents and try to get back to there aera as much as possable then you will start getting some real good loads. look up marther in nc. she has freight going from eden, nc to bklyn nyc it pays 5.00 per mile mainly in the winter its home heating well mclane boilers. i was running back and forth with that during the winter and made great cash. you will also need to rember to get ready to look for your own freight with other brokers. you are a true independent with crst its your business the agents are there to help you but you must call them. also get an aproved broker list from them they have them but wont give them to you unless you request it. not there agent list but aproved brookers that they do business with. i left because after 19 years otr i had enough. time to do something eles.. but good luck with them
Baack Thanks this.
