    Why op?
Cause I'm old and lazy and leased to a small company that has been around since 1932 .
Good rates with same customers and few worries when things get slow ..my settlement check won't bounce and dot leaves us alone .
    That's why .

    Tb0n3 and BryE Thank this.

OP has apparently left the building to go seek understanding.

I’m trying to figure out how I would be able to do the job if I had to pay for those big arse trailers. Specialty trailers can cost a half mil apiece. If I need it, I go get it, make sure she’s working, go load, deliver that load, and drop that big arse trailer. There’s beam trailers, stretch, multiaxle, flats, steps,...everything I need to pull just about anything that needs to be pulled.

Now, if I pulled one trailer and one type of trailer, that would be different. But I don’t. You know, calling someone stupid because they don’t do what you do means that you’re probably a doorslammer.

Well, 1st off, I could give a rats butt about Jimmy Hoffa. 2d. Talk about stuck on stupid, you have a lot....never mind SMDH.
I have been leased to the same small (40 trucks) company for 10 years, In fact I have 3 trucks leased to them. You keep talking about brokers will talk to anyone, your right and so will most lumber yards if that’s what you want to haul. Brokers are some of the last people I want to talk to. We prefer having that dedicated freight and direct customers. We run about 25% brokered freight and the rest we run direct. Your worried about giving 10-25% up to a company, how does it feel giving that up to a broker. What else is he doing for you?
Many, I didn’t say all, o/o’s with their own authority and a single truck, running for brokers will never see rates on a regular basis that We get after the company gets their cut. Could be the reason so many of us have been there for so long. And if you were to ever question the company on what a load pays they will gladly show you.
So you keep doing your thing and I’ll keep doing mine.

The mega companies offer lease purchase. And they offer a few other perks.
The idea is to control the freight market.
The last thing a mega wants is to have competition

Are you sure? Yes one year driving and now have my own authority and 2 other drivers working under my authority. Both drivers enjoy working for me and have a great idea to recruit more drivers that are trying to process through the same situation I was once in. "stuck on stupid" reality that drivers go through isn't pleasant and in fact miserable. Trucking can be enjoyable and as long as your safe.

My wife is a Dr. Her friend (who is a family friend) is a Dr. who is in charge of all the Dr. in a hospital. She hires and fires Dr.'s for a big hospital. During dinner she asks me what's it like being a trucker. I told her its the easiest money you can make. It truely isn't a more legit way to make money that is this easy. You don't deal with customer complaints, general public, work atmosphere, politics, yotta yotta. As long as your a safe driver, with safe equipment, it is the easiest money out there to make. Needless to say she agreed. With her job, her stress, it's very high strung and at the end of the day she hates people. Yet when your a trucker you get to make money without that extraordinary stress. I just need more help in understanding why do drivers work for big carriers, worked like a dog, living out of gas station, etc etc. When all the opportunity in the world is out there and all they have to do is work for themselves.

One year ago I barely new how to drive, trucker routes, low bridges etc. 14 months later I have my own equipment, authority and 2 drivers working for me. What are you saying about disgruntled? Thats not very nice sir. I mean I did work at FedEx Freight 12 years in operations mgt plus I have a supply chain degree. So, I just started to be a driver to understand the dynamics and my best options to be a carrier that is safe and profitable. Low and behold, essentially, I'm baffled and loss of understanding to why drivers work for big carriers the pay you like a dog. That's all, I'm not trolling. But I am asking why.
