Actually a company has an obligation to its employees. if things are really slow then as an owner trying to save my own neck,I could save lots of overhead by parking my trucks and laying off drivers. The O/O will get the job done and the company owner won`t be payingout for all thats associated with employees. The burden for taxes, equipment, etc. would then fall on the O/Os.Profit margins may actually go up without having company trucks.
Please just FIRE ME, get it over with!

That's only true if the company doesnt have contracts with companys such as freightliner, international, peterbuilt etc. Also there are not enough O/O to haul all of the freight so the trucks are still very much needed. These larger companies get discounts for leasing so many vehicles, so the cheapest way to go is have the O/O haul low pay loads such as orange juice from tropicana. The load is heavy but isn't worth of much of anything, now they can give the higherpay loads to co. drivers that only make 27-30c a mile and be saving money.

DFW has been running great for Air Freight...and the loads are on the boards. Something is going on, and I think it is that shippers are going with higher quality carriers. In this economy it pays to go with quality. You may be paying the price for someone elses sub-standard performance.
Where do you live? It may be worth checking out the nearest HUB for a major airline... and then market yourselves to the forwarders. Most of them already have their authority and may even have a few trucks. You are an experienced team with decent power....that gives you great options. Take advantage of them. Specializing in a base market creates great customer service situations and LTL shippers love that.
Get your rig cleaned and into tip top shape. The both of you need to go into these operators offices and make yourself known. It is amazing how much or a difference that makes. Show off your rig and brag about your on-time performances. Tell them you want to get enough out of the hub to get you back empty if needed. These guys have the freight and will part with it if the rate is right. Going direct with an in-house O/O is much more profitable then giving it all to someone else.
Hey, If you have any questions, or would like some ideas on how to market yourself, drop me a line, I'd be happy to help!

Hi,
I'm new to the group and to trucking. I started training to drive tractor trailers two weeks ago,(weekend classes, 16wk course with Allied Career School), and will hopefully be working for a company near the end of April. I know the economy is a concern for everyone and fast forward it seems is having a rough time of it right now. Is his situation more of the norm? I'm enjoying the training and look forward to getting on the road. Never realised there was so much involved in being a truck driver. Any advise you all have to offer to a hopefully soon to be green horn would be appreciated.

I told my grate knower of all things,,, get me a load home or I am coming home with your brains. Got a load pronto . All lines have touble finding loads some times,, I never could understand you call in every day they know when your going to be there ,,, WHY DID THEY NOT START LOOKING WHEN YOU LEFT. At the most 72 hours coast to coast. Well now sounds like I,m doing the exhausting. All I can say after thirty seven years behind the wheel,,,,,, The good LORD told us ,,,,,, Its not going to be a perfect world.
