I remember when this happened; the first action the President of China did was have all bank accounts frozen that belonged to the Chinese citizen passengers on that plane.
He knew exactly what he was doing when he ordered that. Within a couple of hours after the plane was reported missing, relatives and friends of the missing passengers started trying to withdraw money from their accounts saying the missing passengers told them that if something happened everything they own they can have. They all had the same story.
Some of them actually broke into the homes of the missing looking for bank records and pin numbers, plus stole everything of value.

i had "survivor rights" on my late dad's bank accounts, and i have them on my elderly mother as well. if either one died, i could go in and clean out the account, and you bet i did, before the bank could do anything.

i do not know how it works over there in China, if they need to have thier names on accounts as well, or they just showed up with withdrawal slips?

I can understand this. It's conceding the ultimate defeat.

When Dad passed on, I was the one that had to convince him it was his time.

They were gonna cut him up in little pieces.

Now this is a man that would crawl through a field of broken glass, never say die.

Beyond that, I had to sign the papers, because he had lapsed into unconsciousness.

Then give my consent blow by blow, more drugs, remove the oxygen, as they basically euthanized him.

It REALLY F with your head when you've spent a lifetime fighting against the world shoulder to shoulder, then placing your hand on his forehead seeing he is getting cold.

And that's basically what these people are going through.

Not accepting the official report means there is still a chance.

    Even when there is none.

They're very strict in China about that. You need government issued picture ID, plus government issued residency card. The whole time you're doing all this at the bank, you're being filmed.
You can withdraw a small amount at an ATM, but must have the bank card and pin number, and you're also being filmed the whole time at the ATM.

yeah, my dad had to go to Hospice care, and after about 2 weeks, literally died in my arms. but his money was safe from the vultures, i took it all out while he was dying, and put it into my mothers account, where it sits to this day. the banks or taxman will not get it. they lock it up for probate, unless there is a WIll and there is, but then it takes all sorts of nonsense to release it.

yeah, dad worked like a dog too, then he frailed away to a wisp of a man.

for the sake of this conversation, i'll have to surmise many of the relatives had a spare card with the PIN number at the ready. maybe not so much "survivors rights" like we do here.

The relatives did not have a card and PIN. It's pretty common in China that when a relative dies, the other relatives charge the house like Antifa charging a Trump rally.
You wouldn't believe some of the things I've seen over there. For example, maybe some guys wife died and he was left with some children to raise. He marries again and the new wife treats the children as if they are her own children and does a good job. Then the husband dies after the children are grown, so the children promptly go to their fathers house and throw the stepmother out on the street with nothing because they want to sell the old run down house and split the money among themselves.
One guy died and left his wife with 3 young boys. When the boys were grown, around their early 20's then the mother died. Two of the boys sued their younger brother saying he's not their real brother because their mother had an affair and he shouldn't get any money after they sell the house. The judge ordered a DNA test and discovered all 3 of the boys had the same father, but the father was actually a neighbor their mother had an affair with.

I really hope they find the black boxes and FDR so they can finally bring this mystery to a resolution. The fact that anyone would intentionally crash a civilian jetliner with innocent people on board is unfathomable-even people who have worked in the aviation industry have creed about this sort of thing.
