GPS or Qualcomm

    Seems the Qualcomm has a good idea of what it’s doing am I better off getting a gps in case or just save for it and use my Qualcomm for now? I’ll be running west of the Mississippi if it helps

    It has navigation and leads you to the entrance usually but sometimes has it’s faults

    A Qualcomm and a GPS are two different things. One is an ELD (Well AOBR likely) and one is well a GPS.
    Now, are you talking about using the GPS feature in your Qualcomm? It then becomes a question of which GPS is better.

    A lot of instinct mixed with equal parts trucker's road atlas, Google Maps Satellite View/Street View and a legal pad with a pen/pencil is all you'll need.

    I did on the Qualcomm last night during a backhauk and calculated right away. Was thinking the gps would be good for truck stops for fuel and rest areas

    The GPS in qualcomm is NOT for YOU. The Qualcomms I have had back in the day is primary a enforcement tool against drivers who are late etc. The dispatcher and most especially a customer will look at your qualcomm in secret and know where you are roughly. But it's not for you.

    We had a laptop in the late 90's early 2000's with a Rand McNally first edition streets and atlas of the USA and it's own antenna for GPS down to 30 feet on the planet in real time (Which I still have) That laptop combined with physical addresses of shippers and recievers pretty much gave us complete freedom in everything. When combined with a Staples or Office Depot CDROMs of all business phone numbers in the entire USA, we had communications with numbers not given to drivers directly. (HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THIS NUMBER!?! DRIVERS DO NOT GET THIS NUMBER!!!! /rant)

    It was very good for what it did in those days.

    In terms of getting into the customer, the company provided GPS is often better. Omni runs at least 2 different versions of gps, navigo and something else (copilot maybe?). Navigo is fantastic for tge ladt few steps, but will often do "interesting " things on route selection.

    The "aftermarket " gps are great for city to city, but suck for getting into the customer. The example I use most often is one of our yards - street address (and pov entrance) is on Webster, truck entrance is around the corner on Doty. Couple of times a month we have a guy just punch in the address, turn into the pov lot (to.be fair it used to be the truck entrance), and have issues .

    A lot of our guys run both, so as long as it isn't a financial burden go ahead and get your own.
