There are other things you need to worry about . You need to carry your medical card . It would be smart to get hazmat . You might wait to get that because many employers won't require it to hire you but will reimburse you for the endorsement and background check if you get them while employed for them . They probably won't reimburse you for it if you get it while in school . If you don't have a criminal record they might also reimburse you for a passport to enable you to go into Canada . The hazmat endorsement isn't adequate to haul hazmat . You must have additional certified training every 3 years . http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/safety-security/hazmat/complyhmregs.htm . Don't restrict your job search to OTR carriers . There are other types of companies needing CDL drivers . If you live near a power plant see what company they use to do their vaccuum work and waterblasting .

First I'm not spending "1000's" of dollars, USA is. I'm not spending a dime, that i dont have. I'm sorry if you take this wrong, but to say that driving a truck is "NOT BETTER THEN UNEMPLOYED", HAS GOT TO BE THE STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVERRRR HEARD!!! Guess you have never been unemployed and had to ask friends for help and a place to stay until class starts. Guess you never had to get some money from family memebers, and for the first time in my 46 years needed help from someone!! BEtter to be unemployed?? I'm hoping you come back with a reply saying you were joking, if not then your lost and maybe spoiled by what you do have.
But god forbid you lose your job and have to ask for help, come back on here and let me know what is better then NO JOB!!!! I was in the military for 11 years and seen it all, but as long as I did my job, and my soliders did thier job life was good, cant be much diffrent in the trucking IND, work hard get paid, work hard get paid, pick up load drop off load, pick
up load drop off load. dee dee dee.... Or stay at my army buddies house forever because thier is so much to be said about being unemployed..

Hello again Mo, and thanks for all the kind words.. As far as home time, dont want it for the year I know I will be working at USA, they were kind enough to pay for my school, (I'M NOT NIEVE<LOL) but a contract is a contract in my eyes and I can give them a year if they give me a job. I have no one to answer to, so living on my own is what i like.. Will I stay in trucking after a year, who knows, but I am where I am and nomatter what some might think unemployment SUCKSSSSSSSSSSS, and a year of steady driving will give me some cash to maybe do something else if trucking doesn;t work out.. No gloom and dome on here will get me down, even if they have the best intentions in mind... And like I said I'm not going in completely blind, I have an army buddy who drives for Crete, and LOVES it, I talk to him at least two or three times every day and, his paycheck big or smaller is there every payday, and we both have the military mind set that you work hard you get paid..He said I will do fine out here with USA and if after the year i want to go to crete he will help me do that.. Thier is nothing that USA or the trucking IND can throw at me that i can't deal with......Another nice day in Farmington:)

I suggest you read the "I really want to be a trucker " and " Hiring freeze includes NY, too #### it " . threads . See what good a CDL does posters there . If you're unemployed you can be looking for a worthwhile job . Going to CDL school you're wasting taxpayers' money . But my comment about spending money on school was not directed at you but in general to anyone considering it . It's a poor investment . With 11 years in the military you would have been smart to stay there and retire . If I did lose my job I sure wouldn't work for the bottom feeders that are the only ones hiring CDL school graduates now . Flipping burgers would be better . No there will not always be trucking jobs for guys like you . The schools are turning out far more than there is a demand for .

Wow and I though the other guy said the most ignorant thing, well he has been topped!! I'm not a "wannabe" anything. I'm an unemployed AMERICAN who served his country for 11 years who is looking for a job, nothing more nothing less. And if someone is willing to pay for my school and promise me ,no one will shot at me then so be it I'll drive a truck. So even if i have driving a truck in a war zone and for 11 years, that makes me a wannbe, then so be it, I WANNA BE EMPLOYEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!And I'm not sure if USA is a bottom feeder or not, seems both sides of that answer are well documenting on this site, but I've seen people working in a casino making 100g a year complain because the boss got pissed that they come in late. ANd :experienced doesn't alway mean better, I'm sure most of the time company are not looking to fire good people who GET THE JOB DONE. Why would USA spend six grand on me and jsut let me go? Or I can be like my army buddy do my job and it gets better every year!! MIght be slow sometimes , but nobody every promised him a rose garden!!!

Thank you for the good info. Yea I'm going to look into hazmat when i get to the school, If i stick it out after the year I will owe USA then I will get all the endorsments i can to open up my options, i've even see that some companys pay a little more per mile for hazmat, so i would be folish not to do it..As far as I can tell USA is goint o do the background check. And I've always had a Passport so thats not a problmem. No Crininal record and no tickets..... Thanks for the great advise.

Again , I was referring to another poster as a wannabe , not you and not USA in particular . But why do carriers spend six grand and just let drivers go ? If a driver screws up and quits or gets fired before they meet their obligation the carrier hasn't spent 6 grand because the driver has to pay it . I'm just responding to your question with a comment about carriers in general training students .

Wow you really have never been unemployed. Either have I up to now. BUt to think fliping burgers is better, then you also have no clue. After I make that mimum wage where am I going to go home too? Where am I living at 7 bucks an hour? ANd I'm not wasting tax payer money, USA trucking is paying for it. ANd even if the Gov was paying for it, i searved with HONOR for 11 years, six grand wouldn't be asking to much!! Again you have never been unemplyod, if you lose youjr job and if only a bottom feeder is willing to give you work and you say no then, your CONFUSED.. And yes thier will always be jobs for GOODDD HARD working people driving trucks. I'm sure when it comes to cutbacks the companies are going to weed out the dirtbags before they would weed out the good workers, only makes business sence..You should get out of teh truckk more and see whats going on around you, next time you stop at a truck stop ask that guy your getting the burger from what he would rather do?? Or the guy making 7 bucks an hour to clean your towels after you shower. Tell them you will give them six grand to go to trucking school or for that matter Ask ANYONE making min wage which they would perfer!!!!!!!!!!! Or go to the unemployment line in any city, and do the same see what thier answer is... But thank for the advice have a great coming week, Fiore

WOW now you hit the nail on the head.' IF A DRIVER SCREWS UP AND QUIETS OR GET FIRED" maybe i'm old fashion but if you sign a contract with someone you SHOULD have to pay it back if you donot fullfill your obligation!!!! You schould get fired if you are a screw up!!! I wont screw up, I wont be late,(without a LIGIT reason) They will get thier year out of me and then I decide where i can go. NO way do they just want to keep pumping out drivers every week just to fire them, that makes no sence. Show me anywhere in the business world where companys say "hey lets spend 6 grand, do a background check, do a phyical, pay for thier hotel, and then they say hey FIRE them right away...Really?? Come on? Big bad evil company, lol some might be bad, some might be evil, but none are stupid to spend so much time and money jsut to fire GODD workers...

O.K. , maybe things will work for you . I just hope you get the miles you need . That's the main issue . But think about what you said about them pumping drivers out every week . They aren't doing that because they are adding trucks . Freight is off for everybody .
