Was wondering what some of your guys experience was like at this school and if you thought it was a better school than most of the others out there? I live in St. Louis but am not sure how great the schools are here. We have MTC, 160 Driving Academy and a community college program. The community college programs sounds good and has good reviews but I’m concerned ab the number of students they allow into each class. As in I won’t get as much time behind the wheel as I would like. I’ve read good things about SDIA and they cap the students out at 6 which I like. It’s an easy drive for me to get home during the 5 week course. I’d be returning to work somewhere in St. Louis after finishing the course. I’d be paying my own way thru any school as of now. I have my CDL Permit, DOT card, all the endorsements and a clean driving history. Thxs!

I went there a few years ago.Definitely one of the best schools around. Great people, facilities and system for getting students ready to pass the test and beyond. Also, best school in Indy if you want to go straight into LTL (2 out of 6 in my class hired on with ODFL right out of SDIA). I don't know if you get a lot more time behind the wheel at sdia, but it is one-on-one with an instructor, which is a plus.
Last I heard, they added a truck and instructor and increased class size to 9.
I'd call the companies in St. Louis you're interested in working for and see if they have schools they prefer to hire out of there. Traveling to Indy to get your CDL might be a lot of extra expense with little return. -
However, if you're interested in working for Sodrel truck lines (they hire drivers in St. Louis, I believe) then sdia is your school. Sodrel will only hire a new CDL holder if they attended sdia (Sodrel owns sdia).

Yeah, I looked into Sodrel and I am interested in LTL. The school there is actually cheaper than the schools in STL... but with driving and paying for the bunk room it almost evens out. I have called around and asked. Most places just said they require 160 hrs and didn’t have a preference. Sodrel did say they only go with SDIA. I’m more concerned ab which school is going to give me the best chance coming out w better driving skills.

No matter where you go, you'll come out with just enough skill to pass the test, and that's about it. Maybe a little more at sdia. They're as good as they get, I think.Last edited: Aug 16, 2018

Thanks for the input! Did the forklift cert come in handy at all for you?

It was nice to have an additional skill to put down on applications but I don't know if it made any difference. I have not operated a forklift since then.

Good to know. Thanks for the info!

Tried to message you but it wouldn’t let me. I went to a meeting for the local community college program today. Seems pretty good. Their range course is an empty parking lot w cones and barriers. I know SDIA mentions having live docks. Does that mean practicing with other trucks coming in and out? I don’t believe the school here has us backing into docks. The more I research things the more I’m thinking I want to get into LTL. Seems like a better chance to stay local. Just wondering it SDIA would help me be better prepared skill wise for LTL or if there wouldn’t really be a ton of difference?
