I saw this on the news a couple of times yesterday. Those people were very lucky. It's a miracle only one person died! I hope they have all learned their lesson about ice safety.

IMO - If you have to put planks across the ice, something should tell you that the ice isn't thick enough and to fish someplace else or on another day. :yes2557:

The planks have nothing to do with ice thickness,...They are used to travel across stress cracks and pressure ridges in the ice,...The biggest problem was the off shore winds that moved the ice out....

I grew up in the midwest, and I still don't understand the fascination with sitting on a frozen lake or river to catch fish while freezing your backside off.:biggrin_25512:

Ice fishing has never appealed to me, neither has driving on a frozen lake. I know people that do it and have been invited in the past. i politely refused and then said i'd be willing to call them a psychiatrist about their suicidal behavior. Since then no invites no problem!

the biggest problem was it was 50 degrees yesterday and the ice was melting and making it weak. You dont go out on ice to have fun after 2 days of warm weather
