A friend of mine was at the J in Birmingham the other night. A driver parked beside him was in the bunk asleep, left his britches in the passenger seat with his wallet in them. Some crackerhead broke the passenger side window out, grabbed his britches and wallet and took off into the woods.

Ok @OLDSKOOLERnWV what’s your break-in routine now going forward? Just curious for some of us that have never done this?

Trailer is loaded and I'm pulling out about 5:00am, work it and build a little heat in it for a few hours.

Ok @OLDSKOOLERnWV @snowman_w900 or anyone else what’s the major difference between an 855 and an N14 then the select plus. I remember when I wanted an N14 525 really bad. That was before I got my 550 Cat. Still think they’re probably a good million mile motor.

JD, N14 are still 855 Cu. Inches (14 liter) just like a big cam, but they changed pretty much everything in a N14 to supposedly a little more robust( 2 piece steel crown pistons, thicker rods and changed the crankshaft, but still 855 cu.in. and added CAC like @OLDSKOOLERnWV did to his big cam.

Bad part on an N14 versus a 855 Big cam is they went with a heavier crank and rods in the N14, but didnt change the main bearing and block structure to support the heavier rotating assembly and extra torque with the electronics and programming and that cause major block and main cap fretting in the N14. Spun main bearings on some. Also, the N14 had the high flow sorta cooling like the old BC1 engines.

Celect versus Celect Plus N14 engines was just mainly an added ground in the wiring system little bit different wiring and changed the heads slighty. Also, you had more parameters to play with in a Celcet Plus versus a Celect. Also, you could get a factory 525 plus, where as a Celect was 500 1850tq max from factory. A cpl 2025 was a factory plus with the 6 or 8? Hole nozzles if memory serves me right.

They were both great engines of the day in my opinion.

@johndeere4020 , I forgot to mention but you already know I bet, that late 80s early 90s they built the first N14 as STC Mechanical engines before the celect electronics out.

@snowman_w900 Now here is the big question. Computers and overall power aside, which is the better motor?

I did not know that, I thought the N14 was Cummins foray into electronic engines after Detroit changed the game with the 60 series.

Well, better I like a late 855 BC IV with the early BC I high flow cooling, personally. Along with a few other goodies.

But for power, cruse control and strong jakes, and steel top pistons with the simplicity of the older electronics (like pre 2008 stuff).....I like a late 2000 N14 Celect plus. They had the latest updated block in my opinion and seemed to do ok under bigger power. 600 at 2050 was all you would ever wanna put to it and drive it right.

That's just me. I know what @OLDSKOOLERnWV will say lol
