I've got a proheat on my truck. It has 2800 hours on it now and works great on the heating side, the cooling is not that great when its over 75 degrees outside. It has sure saved me a ton of fuel in the 3 months that i've owned the truck. I'm not sure if you can still get proheat or if they were bought out by carrier.

OK so comparable weight to the ponypack APU.

Here is another problem with battery systems. If you are on a 34 hr reset some where the bats will not last any where close to the full 34.

I'll take a real APU myself.

I agree with Brick, a real apu from ponypack, tri-pack, or scs/fridgette. If you are in the middle of nowhere for a 34, common sense says a apu is a better option. A gas gen requires a different fuel; therefore, it is more expensive to keep fueling it up. also, the apu charges up those batteries you have instead of installing additional betteries.

the pony pack has it's downside. It is a good unit if your truck runs the old york style ac compressor but if you have a newer style ac compressor the pony pack is hard on the reed valves and tends to blow them out.
other then that it's a good unit from the research i'v done and the people i've talked to

This is where the small honda or yamaha generator would come into play.. As to Kings comment of having to have gas. The little gens I mentioned run 8hrs on .6 gals of gas. 1 gallon of gas for 16 hrs run time to keep the batteries charged and they are much quieter than a larger diesel powered APU. Its all a matter of choice... Thats why they make the Volvo that Brick loves so much. Theres no accounting for taste. :biggrin_25525:

When buying an APU do some homework. Not all APU's are created equal nor do they do the job in the same way.
For an overview google APU HQ and take a look at the comments by a company in Golden Colorado. They appear to be agents and repair shop fixing all APU's.

This same company is to my knowledge is fixing and overhauling Rigmasters and I saw a flyer in the offices of HVH transport in Commerce City Co, offering parts and service support only last week.

Probably a stupid question, but I talked to the recruiter at Millis today and she said the trucks have APU's in them.. I know what Inverters do, but what does an APU do? I know it's an auxiliary power unit, but do you plug things into the APU or does this just keep your batteries charged and you still need to buy an inverter? Does the APU also run the heating and cooling for the truck (like being able to use the heater without the truck running to save fuel)? Sorry for the dumb questions, I've seen them talked about alot, but I really don't know what one is I guess. Thanks guys/gals!
