All jokes aside with you having limited experience in both, I would say don't look for a brand under the hood. Buy a truck that fits your budget and need. Learn as you go. It's only nuts and bolts righty tighty lefty loose. There are no mistakes only learning opportunities. I do bleed and breath CAT but they are what I cut my teeth on. My Dad didn't cull nothing. He bought the bargain of the day when he needed or wanted to add a truck. Made what it had run.
Take this advice for what it's worth. No one has the vested interest in the truck that's feeding your family that you do.
