If a driver has A class CDL but starts driving B class trucks instead of A class & did it for say 5 years. If the ever wanted to go back to driving A class tractor trailer will they be able to? Or is their license no longer valid

    It won't affect the license.

The license is valid as long as you keep renewing it. That said, many of the slimy mega carriers will want recent tractor-trailer experience so they may make you take a refresher course. My wife hasn't used her CDL in twenty years, but it is still valid and she stays medically qualified, just in case she ever had to recovery one of our trucks or something when I had my fleet.

Most companies will just give a simple road test or maybe send the driver on a couple of runs with one of their drivers to get him refreshed.

It does not matter. Class A stays class A. Provided you pass the renewal tests related to Class A. It includes everything except Motorcycles which generally need a seperate class.

The only time Ive seen people talk about class B work with a class A was with discriminatory employers using it as a very poor excuse during interviews telling me Im over qualified. Typical yankee BS. I solved that by moving south and did the same class B work for years with a class A. No problems and none of that silly excuses.

In the future in your life when you stop trucking for whatever reason, maintain that Class A. You will be allowed to run somewhat heavier vehicles than just basic cars and pickup trucks when you need to without trouble.
