    Hello friends
Last year my 2006 Volvo with a Cummins Isx was having pressure in the cooling system. It was pushing coolant from reservoir into the overflow tank. Ended up being a cracked head. Replaced it with a new one in March last year. Two weeks ago it has started to bring the same symptoms especially pulling through hills. Does not over heat. Just pressure in the system. Could i be dealing with same cracked head again? How do i test and eliminate air compressor? Thanks in advance

Here we go again... What caused the head to fail the first time around? And let me guess, they removed your old head and slapped a new one on with a new gasket and told you to have a nice day? Correct?

Shop only did the head. Didn't do the lower end. Please tell me more. Seems like you know more.

Shop didn't tell me the cause. Shop said it's a common issue with Cummins. I have been reading about liners dropping or protrusion

To test the air compressor remove this big nut and place a quarter in there and re-install nut. Start motor and see if you have any coolant/air build up in the cooling system. If you have air/pressure in the system with the quarter in there, it is not the compressor.

I would also go to NAPA Auto Parts and purchase a Block Test Kit, around $50. If you have exhaust gas in your cooling system it will let you know in a minute or two. CM-870.jpg

They never diagnosed it properly, which would have entailed dropping the pan and barring the motor to look for coolant on the cylinder walls. The heads rarely fail on their own on these Cummins, it is normally a fretted liner that takes them out. It scores the bottom of the head which is what causes the failure, and your symptoms.

Here is the underside of the head, see the mark, that is from the liner, it scored the head as well as ruining the gasket. It does not take much. #5 cylinder seems to be the one that normally breaks lose.

Thanks so much for shedding some light. I am not loosing any coolant at the moment. Are you a mechanic? If not would you recommend an honest shop who know what they are doing? Truck still runs good. I might catch it before i crack the head if it hasn't already ctacked again

Did you have to buy another new head after that damage by the liner? Or just machined it?
