    Hello All

I just recently in - frame overhauled the engine in my truck , using all Cat parts sparing no expense upwards of 13k just in parts . I worked for a local Cat dealer for about 10 years and do my own work and knowingly Checked liner protrusion and plastaguaged crank . Once cranking the engine it ran perfectly and after bringing up to operating temperature and rechecking all fluid levels I went for a test drive and noticed on the way back to my shop the engine started sounding a little different . I left the truck there overnight and came back this morning and noticed it was a gallon low of coolant and upon cranking and running the truck begin to white smoke and actually blowed coolant out exhaust clamp at the turbo so I know there had been some that seeped into the combustion chamber . My question is I know everything was done by the book so basically I’m having a parts issue ? Just trying to get some more opinions. Thanks in advance !

Well, I don't know much about your particular motor... But, when I in framed my ISX, when setting the head there is a plug that has to be removed from the old head and installed in the new head. I have heard of more than a few shops neglecting to do this, the results sound like yours.

This was an external plug, the plug was on the underside of the head if memory serves me right, along with two on the side. We set the head and I am standing there thinking, did I put that plug in? I did... Not something you want to forget. ;-)

    I gotcha , and no it’s not lol !

This engine here has been monkeyed with in the past and I probally spent 20 hrs chasing parts numbers and trying to make sure the correct parts for this serial number is on it and not parts from a older 7FB or 4MG even though they will enter change . Even our local Cat dealer caught heck trying to figure out what’s suppose to be in it versus what was in it when I popped the head off

Culprits, rolled liner o-ring top or bottom ones. Bad head ( I've seen them bad straight out of box) deck isn't level on block or head. Liner flange cracked, did you check oil cooler or replace it at overhaul ? Cracked block around the area of #5 hole.

Oh I can only imagine... I have heard more than a few horror stories getting parts since Cat got out of the class 8 market. And crap parts too... I was down at Haggai's shop, and there was talk of bad parts right from Cat. Jerry was having fits with a few motors he in framed due to the poor parts quality. And the parts were direct from Cat.

Were they actual CAT parts or their CAT Classic parts? Everyone I talked to says stay clear of the classic parts unless its for something antique that you take on and off a truck twice a year for shows.

I don't know which parts he was using, but they came from the local Atlanta area Cat store. He was having issues with the pistons, they were used, and mismatched. Yes used, I don't know how you would reman a piston. The heads were an issue too, like Superhauler stated, machined to an inch of their life, not much left and issues regarding level of the head and what not. And these were not cheap parts, I think it was what, the platinum kit? I forget how much he said his cost was, but I remember it was quite a bit more than my ISX kit, by quite a bit, and the parts, like I said, were questionable. Just going by what he, Jerry had stated. Jerry got it all figured out, but not very happy about the entire episode. His name goes on these motors, and I can't blame him for being a bit ticked off.
