Hello everyone. I am 22 and located in Mississippi. I want to get my CDL and start truck driving. Right now, my best option is looking like getting my CDL through a trucking school.
I have been considering doing this for a while now, so I finally applied to KLLM’s program in Jackson. However, I got rejected for a rear-end collision that happened back in 2015. Since I hit another vehicle from behind, I was determined to be at fault. Apparently, KLLM looks at your accident record for the past 5 years and each accident is assessed on an “individual basis”. Whenever my recruiter called, he was very short and said that they could not accept me due to the accident and that was that.
Now, I’m not really sure where to go from here. My plan has been to go to KLLM and this is the only trucking company I have really looked into. Does anyone know of any companies that will overlook this accident or does not look farther back than over three years?
I know truck driving is what I want to do as my career and I am really worried that this accident from three years ago is going to prevent me from ever working in this field. I do not know anyone that drives so I have no one to personally ask for advice on what I should do/need to do to. Please help!

Try Stevens Transport - www.stevenstransport.com - has their own cdl school.
You may have to attend a private or community college cdl school, then go with a 2nd chance company just to get started.
Some 2nd chance companies are:
Western Express
TransAm
Carolina Cargo
Senn Freight Lines
USA Truck
Roadtex TransportationMsTrucking and CJ701 Thank this. -
Thanks for your reply! I will look into these companies. I really wasn’t wanting to go through a community college but if that is my only route then it is the route I will have to take! I wish I would’ve applied to KLLM sooner and found out I wouldn’t get in since the school semester has already started for the fall, but I am glad to hear that there are companies that would still be willing to give me a chance!
As far as driving schools, I’ve seen where, for example, Swift only asks for your driving history for the past three years. Does this mean that they wouldn’t look at the accident since it was right over three years ago? -
Swift might hire you, give them a try.
Swift does hair follicle drug test, if that matters. Need to be clean 12 months.MsTrucking Thanks this. -
Thanks for your insight! I really appreciate it. No issues as far as a drug test goes.Chinatown Thanks this.

I won't try to add to anything @Chinatown has told you. However before I signed and indenture myself for a year with a carrier, I would check out getting that CDL through a Tech school. Most of these schools have kickazz records when it comes to job placements. Just saying, look around before you sign anything!
MsTrucking Thanks this. -
Thank you! I just called a local CC this morning and asked about their program and their next class starts in October. I may head that route. The class would be free through the WIN job center and they help with job placements. They said the accident may be an issue but that someone would likely take me on. The only thing that I am struggling with is that the truck schools pay while you are training. I’m not sure if I can go 15 weeks without pay. Will be a struggle for sure!

I am not sure what to tell you about living in the here and now. This is very important. Now by my comment do not infer I was bad mouthing the company financed schools. In the end a person must do what is best for them. I do wish you well and can tell you for a FACT that rear ender on your record will not be much of a problem in the future.
MsTrucking Thanks this. -
Nothing is going to prevent you from trucking. So what if some sourpuss in a large company rained on you with a phone call. Most of the time they cannot be bothered to call a rejected applicant back. I hate to be difficult while tossing peanuts.
Maybe they need someone to TUCK them in at night to feel better at work tomorrow. He he.
Anyway.
You will find trucking to be intolerant of the vehicles you managed to destroy in the past, but given enough time provided you did not use a CMV in a felony or murdering you will find work in one at some point in the future. Just not right now.
My own position would be some what caustic to such a sourpuss in hiring over there in Jackson. Thinking of all the insurance scammers I did not hit when they deliberately set up in front with full braking to try and make me hit them.MsTrucking Thanks this.
