I wonder which is best:
---putting the antenna between tractor and trailer with most of it blocked front-and-back and just a few inches looking over the top, or
---putting the antenna on the mirror arm with much more of it exposed to front-and-back?
Both are limited to the 13.5 foot maximum.Slowmover1 Thanks this. -
Mirror arm all day long!!..Your limited to 13'6" yes but you have more signal capture and just because of height restriction doesnt mean your stuck with a 5ft ant..When the wind hits it im about trl height..
-
Thanks to you both.
I’ll carry a shorter spare. I believe the Wilson is right at 13’6” as shown after re-measuring. The areas in which I run are post-war, and post-1970 (suburban sprawl) so maybe I won’t break it off before:
1) Ordering and installing a topguntec Z-Mount for antenna at the curb mirror over the passenger door. I’m open to other ideas. Still prefer a co-phase setup.
2) Then, what type/length antenna; plus what length of coax and how to route.
3) Figuring out where to tap DC power. This truck a good deal more complicated (Peterbilt Smart Air; batt-powered sleeper AC).
Likeliest, I’ll keep running stock system until after I can afford purchase of a Rig Expert Analyzer and a Fluke Multimeter. Job change slowed me down on $$ purchases.
Took awhile to find binding posts in overhead as a Peoplenet GPS box threw me off by hiding posts, but with built-in speaker above driver, I think I’ll again run the 880 Bearcat to keep things simple for a time.
I’m still assembling the two TAC COMM Radio Carriers at home with power from the Rig Runnner and coax jumpers. Configuration decisions.
As I don’t “like” the 12V power outlet locations on this Pete I may add the function of chargers for phone & headset to that assembly.
This different job will get me thru the house more often (drop yard only a few miles away), so it’ll be easier to do these projects. Last job I was too rarely home. -
Haven’t come across a mirror mount specifically for the 579.

A reg expert aa30 is around 200 the higher you go the more $..
There is no real advantage in co phase other than a bit more rec from passenger side..Your trans pattern changes some so you dont get as far in front and back as with 1 ant..But two gets better 360 deg rec just not the same distence as 1...How much i couldnt say..10-20% maybe...
Also take in affect that the right side takes more abuse from trees n such.Slowmover1 Thanks this. -
Get creative..Make one...I have an idea for the new cascadia, just gotta stop in to a maxhine shop and have it made..Basically im haveing a piece of ss shaped as the door mount for the mirror..Add a lip at the foward tip and weld a shaft for the ant stud/bracket to mount to....It will bolt up between door and mirror itself useing exsisting bolts..A metal sandwhich if you will..Slowmover1 Thanks this.

I haven’t yet looked at how mirrors are mounted or made measurements.
This is a popular truck, so I’m a little surprised something isn’t available already (2012 intro IIRC). -
Simple..Do the same im doin..Make a bracket exactly the same as how mirror bolts to door..Just have a layer of rubber between to keep the elements out..
Slowmover1 Thanks this. -
The 30 is discontinued. DX Engineering has the 35 at $270.
The multimeter I’ll go with is about $170. (Also need it at home; no end to projects).
