I hope that this one goes into the right area for students primarily. I could have easily put this in the experienced driver side.

This is a Student facing a 5%. Not sure if it is his first downgrade. (Maybe...) Without giving away the situation, let's just leave it at the title, Intense Downgrade Experience for trainee. If you follow the trainee's body language you can see a stiff neck and particular the shaking hand followed by a fixed staring ahead. Trainer was all over it. Trainer was intense too, but I think for a moment it was really necessary to make this Downgrade work properly for Trainee.

(As a side note, engineers really want to make those 4ways obnoxious these days. I remember the old school slide toggle under the steering wheel for them, not so bad back then in them old days with the old signal box)

I don't watch ole boys channel much, but if I remember correctly that fella "Rodney" passed away either during training on home-time, or right after training.

    I did not know that.

Im sorry to learn of that. I don't follow channels other than Scottie67 of this Forum much on you tube. I'm actually not a big user of you tube. I have a channel as well related to organ work (Which is pretty crappy anyway as a deaf person) and you tube constantly stuffs so many random videos into it Im constantly cleaning up the messes.

I came across this one searching for downgrade wrecks from people who made some big mistakes or saved their rigs like a boss for a thread reply earlier tonight. And found this one, it has a good ending. Just intense there for a minute.

Same here, I watch maybe one or two trucking YT channels, if that. I have varying other interesting on YT though, and it can certainly be useful to kill a little time.

Another way of making them idiot proof. Equally annoying is the self cancelling turn signals. I always thought, what nimrod thought that was a good idea on a big truck? But then I started noticing all the knuckleheads leaving their signals on for miles and miles, or turning left with the right signal still on, etc. and then I kinda started to understand their reasoning.

Good video. I don’t usually watch this junior honduras guy because he talks too #### much, but this was a pretty good one.

Well.. that was a great learning experience for the Rook.

I question the trainers lead on the focus of downshifting on a steep grade.. especially when the trainee is so new to the game.
At some point, when more comfortable, they can work on that.

IMO, they should have selected the proper gearing at the Apex and maintained it.
I don't know if that companies guidelines disallow engine braking while learning proper technique or not, but it's a tool that'll save your but.

That said... every driver should be able to navigate a 6% grade without a Jake.

I did have a minor quibble about jacobs braking demanded by the trainer combined with the stab braking. I was thinking trainee maybe needed to learn how to place a engine brake into a situation where it will hold her all the way down with cold brakes conserved for when you really need it. I suppose I'll take the any gear in his situation as a win versus scratching a gear that will refuse it anyway all the way down without power to the drives.

Another thing was I was worried that trainee was not keeping a eye on his trailer the left rear in particular because you have a awful lot of traffic coming through at higher speeds. But for a first or nearly first run down I think trainee kept it together and will be ok with a few more before he hits the really big ones.

It helped that that particular hill is only about 1.5 miles long.
Were that Cabbage, Grapevine, Monteagle, or even Black Mountain it could have turned ugly.

If anyone ever "loses" the ability to find that lower gear.. (where he was trying to jam into 6 instead of the needed 8).. just fall back to the higher gear and reboot.
    GET IT IN SOMEWHERE.
Then, start the progression again down through the gearbox.

It's only hard when you over think it.

I agree, gear in at apex and leave it for a newbie.

Isn't STAB braking in lieu of ABS? I believe he was going for the SNUB braking term?
