Just in case any of you reading this are considering O/O, I have a piece of advice that I learned the hard way yesterday and today. Keep a separate steno pad just for notes about brokers. I took a load from a broker that previously burned me, and didn't realize it until yesterday. I don't really need to write down their name at this point because it'll be burned in my brain forever. But, I bought a new notebook and wrote them down anyway. Never again, screw those people. I went through more mental gymnastics and stress over the last 24 hours than I've ever done in my life. I SHOULD be doing the smart thing and immediately going to bed. But I earned every drop of this beer I'm enjoying right now. I paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears. All of those quite literally. It's been an interesting day. Hope yours has been better than mine.

Anybody been to the place we deliver beer to in Manchester Connecticut? Headed there next Thursday was curious what we are in for?
-
I enjoyed it. It's a much different experience and a nice change from the usual beer and paper loads.

I guess you never had to pick up from the one paper recycling place we pick up from in Louisville, where you have to back down around the side of the building and the two docks are 90 degrees around the back side. At least they give you plenty of room to swing around there.
I think that was my 4th solo load.Steelersjunkie Thanks this. -
I guess it depends on how the drops are scheduled. I did pretty good on those loads because Opie always scheduled me tight on the stops. Got to meet some really nice people along the way. On one occasion I had to do a 10 at one of my stops. Owner was a real sweetheart and was very accommodating. And HOT to boot! Wandered across the street once I was settled in and found a cozy little small-town pub with killer food. That town rolled up the sidewalks at dusk, so there was zero traffic or noise. Best night of sleep I ever had on the road. That was a great road memory

Nope, never had to go to that place. I don't have a frame of reference anymore to compare runs with. Seems like if I gripe about a situation I get one that's even worse on the next load. I've had some crazy crap to deal with since I left. Way worse docks than I ever saw at Millis. I'm at the point now where I won't even mention them or the monster will be worse next time. Hard pass on that. Had a dock last week where I had to blindside in from the street. That place should be bulldozed.

I think some of these docks were designed by people who hate truck drivers.JOHNQPUBLIC and Steelersjunkie Thank this.

My best night's sleep on the road was after a pickup in Cleveland, TN. It was a little wreck of a dropyard in the ruins of what used to be some sort of factory or something, but it was out in this quiet old (mostly) residential area. The main yard was gated and you couldn't park overnight in there, but there was room outside and the night I was there I had the whole place to myself.Steelersjunkie Thanks this.

I understand it when docks are tough to get into because my truck and trailer are long. Some docks are old and were built when all trucks were cabovers or daycabs and trailers were 40 foot long. But I agree with you. Some docks are so poorly designed that even those trucks would struggle.
