My wife talked to her brother about 6:00 this evening. They got another 2.5" between 4:00 and 6:00. Most of the dirt roads are washed out, and the blacktop to the farm was under water just north of town.

Been hauling corn today off my Grand Dad's farm. They have 2 John Deere S790 combines out there. Far cry from a 7700 with a 16 ft header. Sure doesn't take long to load a truck

I started in a 4400 (gasoline engine) with a 12' head. Went on harvest in '91, and was put in a new 9600 with 24' heads in El Centro, Ca and 30' when we got back to the midwest. After that, the 4400 looked like a toy. My FIL has a '93 9600 that now looks like a toy compared to the newer "S" series.

Didn’t know you spent time in El Centro...

Did you need to know Spanish back then or was it optional?

I remember when the 9600 hit. I didn't think they could ever improve a combine more than that. I thought that dial a matic for beans was the real deal. I made a few rounds with David today I swear it's like the space shuttle in the cab.

Got to the rest area just south of Drayton, ND. Other than the road noise from the interstate, it seems like a nice quiet place. Free WiFi is always welcome.

Should be starting around 7am tomorrow, maybe I'll wait a little longer just for dispatch to get in to check that the load has cleared, but I've got a solid 540 mile drive ahead of me tomorrow (just the way I like it), then hopefully logistics is on the ball and gets me at least a direction to go.

This is assuming of course the place doesn't close early and I have to go in there Thursday morning.

Anyone headed into the Wisconsin or Minnesota areas tomorrow, be wary of heavy rain and possible flooding. It's bad.

We would go to the stores and every announcement was in Spanish first, then English. It was pretty cool to cut wheat out there. 140 bu was a bad crop, 160-170+ was the target. We cut on the ground and windrowed the straw, they baled it and moved it off, then burned the fields. After the fire was out, they would bring in cats and rip the ground, then it sat until next year. They had to do this because they didn't get enough rain to decompose the straw.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I've only run 2 combines, both JD. A 55H and 95H. Everyone used hillside combines in that area.

I haven't had the opportunity to get in one of the new ones yet. I thought the 9600 was an amazing machine the first time I got in one of those.
