I did some digging. I found a weight based trucking post related to lumber. My head hurts when you presented that particular bundle. It goes without saying, I'm not too proud to say I am limited in that kind of thinking.

We used to haul wood out of a small railroad spur near Rippon WVa across the old harpers ferry US340 bridge, I don't know if you are familiar with it. But there we have trouble with weights anyway versus that old bridge prior to it's replacement. And a solid block of it on a flatbed is pretty much all up 48000 or more on my Ravens Covered Wagon broken down to suit. A little less on a 48 foot bulkhead freuhauf.

Here is the post in question.

I specifically leave it to someone else to calculate the weight of those bundles. I am ASSUMING you yourself loaded there as you say and were legal before. This time your driver was obviously too heavy. Someone screwed up. Either he did or the shipper did. You will be finding that out come the morning.

Re: 2x6x12 lumber in reply to Eddie Jones, 04-08-2007 08:47:43
    Eddie
Normal bundle of lumber is 40 in high by 48 in wide. For 2x6 that would be 20 high by 8 wide. Bundles are made this size to facilitate hauling. Stacked 3 bdl high on a drop-deck trailer it just clears the loaded height limit, & runs around 45000# for weight limit. 48 in wide fits on an 8 foot trailer. Nowdays most trailers are 8 1/2 feet wide, but the bundle size hasn't changed. Of course actual size of planed lumber would be a bit smaller, but that is close enough.

On the bright side, overweight ticket are just fines.. basically.

No points or severe black marks, just money. An "on the spot" permit if you will.

I know someone else already mentioned that you should start requiring drivers to scale anything over 35k, but I would say that you should pick your own specific number based on each truck’s capacity instead of a generic number like 30k, 35k, etc. There are too many variables, such as empty weight, closed or spread axles, different model trucks, etc.

No matter what you decide on specifically though, I completely agree that you need to put a policy in place to try to avoid situations like this in the future.

    Good luck

When the shipper sends out loads via email the first thing said is must be able to haul 48k. The bol says 50k estimated. My setup allows the 50k without being overweight. As said before the lumber had to very green. But even 13k of water is a lot of water. That’s 1,558.75 gallons of water. I’m not educated on how much water wood holds but seems like a lot to me.

I'm guess wet or green wood is near 30% heavier than dryer wood. And water logged wood don't ask.

=) I have to laugh. This is NOT a attack or meant to troll or offend you. When I laugh it's simply a behavior brought on by a straw too many loading a camel too much in my thinking.

I was fine until you introduced the water issue. And so I have to laugh. It's too much for me. It does not hold water. He he he.

I think Ive said all i can say and be useful here. We will be waiting to see what the shipper says in the morning. It's late.

Wood can hold water. Green wood has to be dried before it's treated or what not. Have you ever tried picking up a small log that's been in a river for 60 years?
